What is the Nara National Museum?

The Nara National Museum, opened in 1895, is the second oldest national museum in Japan. Located in the Nara Park area, it is renowned for its collection of Buddhist art. The Buddhist Statue Gallery displays Japanese Buddhist statues from the Asuka to Kamakura periods, with nearly 100 permanent exhibits, including national treasures and important cultural properties, making it the most comprehensive Buddhist statue exhibition facility in Japan. The Buddhist Statue Gallery is connected to the Bronze Ware Gallery by a connecting passageway, allowing visitors to enjoy both Japanese Buddhist sculpture and ancient Chinese bronzes with a single ticket.

What can you see at the Nara National Museum's Masterpieces Exhibition?

The exhibition comprises two halls: the Buddhist Statue Hall and the Bronze Ware Hall. The Buddhist Statue Hall focuses on Buddhist statues from the Asuka to Kamakura periods, while also introducing the origins of Chinese and Korean sculpture. The Bronze Ware Hall displays ancient bronzes from the Shang to Han dynasties of China (from the Sakamoto Collection). Audio guides are available in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean (for an additional fee). Photo opportunities are available at exhibits marked "Photography Allowed," as well as at the bronze ware exhibits, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of Buddhist art at your own pace.
