COEDA HOUSE is a glass-walled cafe designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Guided by the vision of 'creating a building like a large tree by assembling small branches,' Kuma utilized glass for the exterior and incorporated mirrored furniture to create a design that blends seamlessly into the rose garden. This concept allows the rose garden and the architecture to meet, resulting in a space that resonates with nature.
The name 'COEDA HOUSE' comes from 'CO' (meaning to call/gather) and 'EDA' (branches), representing a large tree formed by small branches. 'COEDA' also carries the meaning of 'people gathering.' The building utilizes the 'extended resin anchor method,' which provides structural strength by fixing wood to steel reinforcement with resin, a feature that remains hidden from view.
Furthermore, to support the structure of COEDA HOUSE, 49 layers of 800-year-old Alaskan cypress were stacked, using 1,500 pieces of timber for the pillars. By stacking small pieces of wood—ranging from 80cm to 12m in length—the structure takes on the appearance of a single, massive tree. African teak is used for the flooring, allowing visitors to enjoy the warmth and scent of solid wood.
