COEDA HOUSE is an all-glass cafe designed by Kengo Kuma, one of Japan's leading architects. Kuma's vision was to 'create a structure that looks like a large tree by assembling small branches.' He used glass for the exterior and incorporated mirrored furniture to create a design that blends seamlessly into the rose garden. This concept allows the architecture to meet the rose garden, creating a space that resonates with nature.
The name 'COEDA HOUSE' comes from 'CO' (meaning 'to call') and 'EDA' (meaning 'small branches'), representing a large tree formed by gathered branches. 'COEDA' also carries the meaning of 'people gathering.' The building utilizes the 'Expanded Resin Anchor Method,' which provides structural strength by fixing steel bars into wood with resin. A key feature is that these joints are invisible.
Furthermore, to support the structure of COEDA HOUSE, 49 layers of 800-year-old Alaskan cypress were stacked, using 1,500 pieces of wood for the pillars. By stacking small pieces of wood—ranging from 80cm to 12m in length—the building takes on the appearance of a single, massive tree. The flooring is made of African teak, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the warmth and scent of solid wood.
