The Daruma dolls found throughout the temple are symbols of wishes coming true after they are made. Visitors purchase a Daruma, write their wish on it after making a prayer, and return it to the temple once the wish is granted, creating a unique tradition of returning wishes. These Daruma are not just souvenirs; they represent perseverance and the spirit of achieving goals.
Kōshō-ji Temple boasts a rich history of 1300 years. In addition to praying for victory luck and dedicating Daruma, the expansive temple grounds themselves are a major attraction. Arima Onsen, one of Japan's three ancient hot springs, offers not only the enjoyment of its famous 'Kinsen' (golden spring) and 'Ginsen' (silver spring) with their distinct mineral qualities but also allows you to wander through the nostalgic hot spring town and savor local delicacies. Must-visit attractions include the historic Onsenji Temple, Tou Tou Shrine, and the footbaths at the Kin no Yu and Gin no Yu, showcasing the hot spring sources. For families, the Arima Toy Museum is also a great option.
To fully experience the charm of Arima Onsen, it is recommended to allocate at least 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This timeframe is sufficient to enjoy a relaxing soak, stroll through the hot spring town tasting local snacks, and visit the main attractions such as Kin no Yu, Gin no Yu, and Onsenji Temple. If time permits, a longer stay will allow for a more in-depth hot spring experience or the exploration of more surrounding facilities, allowing you to embrace the leisurely pace of the town.
Arima Onsen is renowned for its two unique spring qualities: 'Kinsen' (golden spring), which is rich in iron and salt, giving it a distinctive reddish-brown hue and is said to be beneficial for joint pain and skin conditions; and 'Ginsen' (silver spring), a colorless and transparent carbonated spring that helps improve blood circulation. When bathing, it is recommended to shower first, avoid bathing on an empty stomach or after drinking alcohol, stay hydrated, and limit bathing time to approximately 15-20 minutes per session.
Arima Onsen is located in a mountainous area, and temperatures are low during winter (approximately December to February). Occasional snowfall creates a unique atmosphere of hot springs amidst snow. Visiting at this time allows you to enjoy the pleasure of soaking in the hot springs with snowy landscapes, offering a distinct charm. It's advisable to pack plenty of warm clothing and stay informed about local transportation conditions. Although the weather is cold, the warmth of the hot springs provides a special and comfortable winter experience.
