Kokeizan Eiho-ji Temple - A 700-year-old ginkgo tree and stunning red maples (approx. 60 minutes, free time) Standing in the Kokei Mountains, this Zen temple was founded in 1313 during the Kamakura period by National Teacher Muso. The name 'Kokei' was inspired by the picturesque Tiger Creek (Huxi) of Mount Lu in China, which the monk Muso Soseki felt this landscape resembled. Beyond its pond-stroll garden, which is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, the Kannon-do and Kaisan-do halls, built in the late Kamakura period, are designated as National Treasures of Japan. In front of the main hall stands a 700-year-old ginkgo tree, a natural monument of Tajimi City, along with ceramic lanterns made with Shino and Oribe glazes. The autumn foliage at Eiho-ji is recognized as one of the 33 best autumn leaf spots in Hida-Mino. In autumn, the red maples in the garden harmonize with the massive ginkgo tree in front of the main hall, painting the autumn sky with vibrant colors.

Obara Shikizakura Festival - A spectacular sight of about 10,000 trees with 'cherry blossoms and autumn leaves' (approx. 30 minutes, free time) Located in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, the Obara Shikizakura (four-season cherry blossoms) is a hybrid of the wild 'Mame-zakura' and 'Edo-higan' varieties. Unlike typical Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, while they do bloom in the spring, their true peak is in the autumn. The Obara area of Toyota City is planted with over 10,000 Shikizakura trees, and since autumn is also the season for red maple leaves, the Obara area offers a unique landscape where you can enjoy both red maples and cherry blossoms at the same time. This year, the 'Obara Shikizakura Festival' will be held from November 16 to December 1. In addition to enjoying the blooming Shikizakura and red maples, there will be various events and local stalls in the park~ Obara Shikizakura Festival: The 'Shikizakura' (four-season cherry blossoms) unique to the Obara area blooms twice a year: once in the spring (like regular cherry blossoms) and again in the autumn, performing alongside the red maple leaves—a rare natural phenomenon in Japan. Every November, about 10,000 Shikizakura trees bloom across the valleys and country roads, weaving a dreamlike contrast of pink and fiery red with the mountain's autumn foliage, earning it the reputation of 'Spring in Autumn'.

▼ Korankei - A nationally renowned autumn foliage destination (approx. 120-210 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, free time) Korankei is the premier autumn foliage spot in Japan's Tokai region, located in a national park in Asuke-cho, Oku-Mikawa. The name 'Korankei' is derived from the 'Ko' of Kojaku-ji Temple and the 'Ran' of Arashiyama, a famous foliage spot in Kyoto. In the early 17th century, the monk Sanei planted a single maple tree along the banks of Korankei after reading the Heart Sutra. His followers later followed his lead, planting trees along the valley and streams. Today, there are over 4,000 maple trees of 11 different varieties along the banks of Korankei. The beautiful Tomoe River, accompanied by the burning red leaves, creates a picturesque autumn landscape that is a must-see for visitors to Japan. You can take a leisurely walk from the Taigetsu Bridge on the Tomoe River (a tributary of the Yahagi River) to the Koran Bridge to enjoy the scenery along the way. Additionally, Asuke-cho was historically a key route for transporting salt to Shinano (Nagano Prefecture). Therefore, the Sanshu Asuke Yashiki was built along the banks of Korankei, recreating the residence of a wealthy farmer from the Meiji era. Here, you can enjoy the unique natural ecology and experience simple village life, as well as try your hand at traditional crafts like weaving, indigo dyeing, papermaking, and bamboo crafting.
