Busan Maritime & Industrial Tour
Korea’s Port, Shipbuilding and Maritime Miracle

Discover the side of Busan that most visitors never see.

Beyond the beaches and seafood markets, Busan is a city of ports, shipyards, container terminals, marine engineers and global trade.

This tour explores how a city devastated during the Korean War became one of the world’s leading maritime and industrial centers.

Travel across the Busan Harbor Bridge and observe cargo terminals, container yards, working vessels, bridges and industrial districts. Along the way, learn how Busan developed into one of Korea’s most important economic gateways.

The highlight of the tour is Kkangkangi Village in Yeongdo, a real ship-repair district where maintenance work still takes place.

The name “Kkangkangi” comes from the sound of workers hammering steel plates to remove rust and old paint. From public streets and waterfront areas, you may see repair yards, cranes, workshops, marine equipment and vessels undergoing maintenance.

Because this is a living industrial area, the exact scenes visible on the day depend on real operations.

Your guide will explain why ships require constant repair and inspection. A vessel is like a floating factory, with engines, generators, pipes, navigation equipment and safety systems that must remain reliable during long voyages.

You will also learn about container ships, LNG carriers, tankers, dry docks and the wider maritime industries that support Busan.

The route includes the area around Korea Maritime & Ocean University, where future captains, deck officers and marine engineers are trained. When visible, the university’s training ships provide a fascinating look at how students prepare for life and work at sea.

You will also discover why the standard shipping container transformed world trade, how Busan New Port was built for the world’s largest vessels and why Korea became a global shipbuilding power.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Korea invested heavily in steel, engineering, ports, education and export industries. These investments helped companies such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean become major global shipbuilders.

The tour also introduces Geoje, one of the world’s most important shipbuilding regions, and the Geoga Bridge and immersed tunnel that connect it more efficiently with Busan.

This is not an internal factory inspection. The experience uses public roads, waterfront areas, industrial landscapes and viewpoints to explain how Busan’s maritime economy works.

By the end of the tour, you will understand why Busan is much more than a beautiful coastal city.

It is a city of ships, workers, engineers, containers and trade—and one of the cities that helped build modern Korea.
