This full-day Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorge tour starts in the morning with pickup from Taormina or Giardini Naxos (around 8:30 AM). Meet your English-speaking local guide and enjoy a scenic drive towards Mount Etna, passing through two traditional mountain villages along the way.
After about 45 minutes, you will reach a mountain chalet at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, where you can take a short break for coffee and facilities. Here, you will also receive trekking boots and walking poles to make the walk more comfortable and safe on volcanic terrain. Your guide will introduce the day’s program and explain what to expect during the hike.
Then it’s time to explore Mount Etna on foot. The route covers around 4–5 km and combines different landscapes, from forest paths to open lava fields. You will walk across Etna’s unique “black desert” scenery and reach a panoramic viewpoint near a series of craters on the volcano’s northern side, where you can take memorable photos and enjoy wide views over the surrounding area.
One of the highlights of the day is the visit to a lava cave. Equipped with a helmet and torch, you will enter the cave and discover how these volcanic tunnels were formed, while your guide shares interesting facts about Etna’s geology and eruption history.
After the hike, return to the chalet for a relaxing lunch break (about one hour). You can choose between two menu options: a lighter meal with a sandwich, drink, and cake, or a more complete option with pasta, bruschetta, drink, and coffee. Vegetarian and gluten-free choices are available.
In the afternoon, continue the experience with a transfer of around 45 minutes to the Alcantara River. Here you will have the chance to enter the Alcantara Gorge and admire its spectacular basalt rock formations, shaped by ancient lava flows and water over thousands of years. You will have time to enjoy the scenery and take photos before returning to Giardini Naxos and Taormina in the late afternoon (approximately 4:00–5:00 PM)..
In the afternoon, continue your journey to the Alcantara River, home to one of Sicily’s most spectacular natural wonders. Walk inside the first hundred meters of the impressive Alcantara Gorge and admire the towering basalt canyon walls, shaped by ancient lava flows and water over thousands of years.
If you wish, take a refreshing swim in the river or simply relax by the riverbanks and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this stunning location before returning to Taormina.
