Start at the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum. Once able to seat up to 50,000 spectators, work on the immense theater began in 72 AD but wasn’t completed until 8 years later. Providing wild spectacles between man and beast, it was the most impressive of all the Roman arenas.
Walk through the remains of the Roman Forum, where Romans spent time praying, trading, conversing with fortune tellers, electing their leaders, and even playing chess. Stroll from the Circus Maximus to Palatine Hill to see where Romulus and Remus were found by a she-wolf, and so began the story of Rome.
Continue your walk through the Imperial Forums: Octavian Augustus, Caesar, and Trajan. Arrive in Piazza Venezia, where the man who wanted to be known as a new Caesar — Mussolini — addressed his speeches to the clapping crowd. It's also where the new kings of Italy built their memorial, the Victor Emanuel Memorial, also known as the Wedding Cake.
