Ascend Chhukung Ri for views of Island Peak and surrounding glaciers, then cross your first high pass, Kongma La, with glacier views. Stand at Everest Base Camp and catch a sunrise from Kala Patthar.

Cross icy high terrain and descend into the Gokyo Valley. Climb Gokyo Ri for panoramic views and explore the glacier lakes. Cross the final pass, Renjo La, with views of Everest, and descend to Lumde.

Follow the Bhote Koshi River through Sherpa villages, retrace the river trail back to Lukla, and fly back to Kathmandu for leisure, shopping, or relaxation.

Key Facts & Destination Insights

Location: Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979). The park covers 1,148 km² of the Khumbu region and ranges in elevation from 2,845m to the summit of Mount Everest (8,849m).

Total Distance: Approximately 160 to 180 km (100 to 112 miles), depending on side trips.

Duration: 20 Days (15-16 days of actual trekking).

Difficulty: Strenuous to Very Challenging. The trek requires 6 to 9 hours of hiking on pass days, traversing rocky scree, exposed ridges, and occasionally icy glaciers.

The Three Passes:

Kongma La (5,535m / 18,160ft): The highest pass, known for its rocky, loose terrain.

Cho La (5,420m / 17,782ft): The most technical pass, requiring a glacier crossing.

Renjo La (5,360m / 17,586ft): Famous for arguably the best panoramic views of Mount Everest and the Gokyo Lakes.

Highest Point Reached: Kala Patthar viewpoint at 5,545m (18,193ft), offering unobstructed sunrise views of Mount Everest.

Everest Base Camp (EBC): Sits at an elevation of 5,364m (17,599ft) at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall.

Gokyo Lakes: A pristine alpine wetland system located at 4,700–5,000m, comprising some of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, sitting alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier (the largest glacier in Nepal).

Wildlife: The trekking route passes through alpine zones that are natural habitats for the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and the Impeyan pheasant (Danphe, Nepal’s national bird).
