Mount Fuji is Japan's tallest peak and a globally recognized symbol, famous for its perfectly symmetrical cone shape. Its majestic beauty changes with the seasons, making it a captivating sight year-round. It also holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Japanese people, revered as a sacred mountain and a source of artistic inspiration. Viewing its awe-inspiring presence is a highlight for many visitors to the region.
For visiting Hakone Shrine and Owakudani from Tokyo, an organized bus tour is a highly convenient option. These tours handle all transportation, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery without navigating public transport connections. If traveling independently, you would typically take a train from Tokyo to Odawara, then use the Hakone Tozan Railway, Hakone Ropeway, or local buses to reach specific attractions like Hakone Shrine and Owakudani. An organized tour streamlines this process considerably.
The best seasons for clear views of Mount Fuji are typically autumn and winter, from October to February, due to clearer skies. Spring also offers beautiful views with cherry blossoms. While viewing Mount Fuji is generally possible year-round, its peak climbing season is usually July to early September. Outside this period, climbing routes are mostly closed due to snow and dangerous conditions, but the surrounding areas and viewing points remain accessible. Weather can be unpredictable, so checking forecasts is recommended.
At Owakudani, visitors can experience a unique volcanic valley known as the "Great Boiling Valley." Here, active sulfur vents and hot springs create a striking landscape with steam rising from the ground and a distinct smell of sulfur. A popular local delicacy is the "Kuro Tamago" or black egg, cooked in the natural hot springs, which are said to extend one's life. The area also offers panoramic views of the surrounding Hakone mountains and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.
Oshino Hakkai consists of eight pristine ponds fed by melted snow from Mount Fuji, purified over decades through porous volcanic rock. These crystal-clear ponds are renowned for their natural beauty and the opportunity to see Mount Fuji reflected in their waters on calm days. Historically, the springs were a sacred site for Fuji worshippers. Today, visitors can enjoy the traditional thatched-roof houses, explore the various ponds, and sample fresh spring water, making it a charming and culturally rich stop.
While the exact duration can vary with tour itineraries, visitors typically have ample time to explore Hakone Shrine and its immediate surroundings. This allows for enjoying the iconic "torii gate of peace" floating on Lake Ashi, visiting the main shrine buildings nestled in dense forest, and soaking in the serene atmosphere. It also provides opportunities for photography and a leisurely walk around the lakeside area to appreciate the natural beauty.
During a day trip, excellent photo opportunities of Mount Fuji can be found at several locations. Oshino Hakkai offers stunning reflections of the mountain in its clear spring waters, often framed by traditional village scenery. Areas around Lake Ashi in Hakone also provide picturesque views, especially with the iconic torii gate of Hakone Shrine in the foreground. Depending on the tour route, elevated spots like some areas in Owakudani can also offer panoramic glimpses of the majestic peak.
For a full-day tour covering these diverse locations, visitors should consider packing layers of clothing, as temperatures can vary significantly between coastal Hakone, the volcanic Owakudani, and the base of Mount Fuji. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring shrines, villages, and volcanic terrain. It's also advisable to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat, especially during warmer months. Checking the weather forecast beforehand will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
