Explore Płaszów Camp with an expert guide and learn about stories of loss, survival, and the lasting legacy of Oskar Schindler. This guided walk provides historical context and space for reflection at one of Kraków’s most solemn sites.
The tour begins with a walk past Ghetto Heroes Square in the Podgórze district, a place closely tied to the history of the Kraków Ghetto. Neglected for decades after the war, the square was redesigned in 2005 as a memorial. Its striking installation of large metal chairs symbolizes forced displacement and absence, creating a powerful tribute to the ghetto’s victims.
The experience then continues at the former Płaszów Camp, established in 1942 on the grounds of Jewish cemeteries. Originally a forced-labor camp, it later became a concentration camp where more than 35,000 prisoners were held and thousands lost their lives. During the guided visit, you will trace the former layout of the camp through surviving sites such as the Grey House, the roll-call area, remnants of camp infrastructure, mass graves, and the Monument of Torn-Out Hearts.
A key part of the narrative focuses on Oskar Schindler, who arranged work permits for prisoners registered in Płaszów and later transferred many of them to his factory, saving the lives of more than a thousand people. With few structures remaining, the power of Płaszów lies in its vast open spaces and silence—creating an atmosphere that encourages careful learning, remembrance, and quiet reflection.
Unlike sites with extensive preserved buildings, Płaszów stands as a landscape of memory. Its emptiness underscores the scale of loss and offers a respectful space to acknowledge history and honor those who suffered there.
