Tucked away along the Nieuwe Keizersgracht, the Luther Museum Amsterdam is a hidden gem housed in the magnificent former Evangelical-Lutheran almshouse Wittenberg (1772). With its authentic boardrooms, elegant interiors and atmospheric church hall, the building itself is a highlight of your visit - offering a rare glimpse into Amsterdam’s past beyond the busy tourist routes.
Inside, you’ll discover a fascinating story about identity, freedom and society. Through historical objects, contemporary art, literature and music, the museum connects past and present, exploring themes such as personal responsibility, social justice, freedom of belief and the relationship between individuals and authority - issues that remain highly relevant today.
The exhibitions reveal how a once-small religious and cultural minority became deeply woven into Dutch history and culture. You will encounter remarkable figures such as statesman Johan Rudolf Thorbecke, socialist Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis, and painter Thérèse Schwartze, whose stories bring the broader narrative of Dutch society to life.
Each year the museum presents three temporary exhibitions alongside a rich program of talks, concerts and special events - including the celebrated Bach Week. Thanks to its intimate scale and passionate volunteers, every visit feels personal, welcoming and thoughtful.
To make your experience even more pleasant, every guest is welcomed with a free cup of coffee or tea - a small but meaningful gesture that reflects the museum’s warm and inviting atmosphere.
