Begin your walking tour in the historic Kalverstraat, one of Amsterdam's oldest areas. Stroll along the Singel to reach the Herengracht, then explore the main canals via the '9 Little Streets' (De Negen Straatjes) that lie between them. Pass the oldest theater in Amsterdam and admire the richly decorated canal houses, with an ever-changing view of the canals.
Depending on the route your guide chooses, hear the story of what a sailing ship has to do with the first Dutch nursery school, see a Transvaal Boer and a 'lion spitting rope'. Visit the "French Castle" and the Cromhout Houses.
End with a loop around the Westerkerk and its tower, with a small statue of Anne Frank and the Homomonument (Gay Monument). By the end, you'll know why houses were built leaning forward, why "pothuizen" stand on street corners, and what a "konkeltje" is.
