On Christmas Eve 1828, a jury was locked into an Edinburgh courtroom and not released until it had decided who would hang. Tonight, that jury is you. Sworn in beneath the floodlit castle, you'll carry the name of a real victim through the dark side of the Old Town as your storyteller unravels Edinburgh's most infamous case - the West Port murders of Burke and Hare. Stand on the ground where their lodging house stood. Climb the Vennel to the old city wall for the finest night view of the castle. Follow the money to the anatomy schools that paid cash for bodies and asked no questions - and pass the building where William Burke's skeleton still stands in a case tonight, almost two hundred years on. On a silent street the tour crowds never find, hear the roll of the Sixteen called through the gates of Old Surgeons' Square, where sixteen bodies were carried in and paid for in cash. Then take your place where the real trial ran all night, and cast your verdict - a slate token, into the bag - on the one man the law let walk free: William Hare, who sold his partner to the gallows and was never tried at all. This is true crime told straight. Real history, real reported hauntings on the route, no costumes leaping out of doorways. Every stop is in the open air on public streets - and somehow that makes it worse. A two-hour evening walk of about 3 km (just under 2 miles) through the Old Town and Southside, entirely outdoors on public streets - dress for Edinburgh weather; the tour runs rain or clear. One flight of historic steps, with a step-free route used in bad weather. Two gentle participation moments - answering a name, and casting a token vote - with no acting, reading aloud, or being singled out; joining in is always optional. Recommended for ages 12+: the story is true and told seriously. Starts at the west end of the Grassmarket and ends on the Lawnmarket, two minutes from the Royal Mile.
