Discover the enchanting world of traditional Lao paper-making in this immersive half-day workshop at the Porsaa Learning Center & Art Gallery, a hidden gem in Luang Prabang perfect for families, creative travelers, and culture enthusiasts. This hands-on experience invites you to explore the art of Mulberry ‘Saa’ paper, a centuries-old craft rooted in the northern regions of Laos.
Your journey begins with a warm welcome from local artisans who will guide you through the fascinating process of making Saa paper from scratch. Using the bark of fast-growing mulberry bushes, which are also a vital food source for silkworms, you’ll learn how this sustainable material is transformed into beautiful sheets of handmade paper. These bushes play a crucial role in supporting the local handicraft and silk industries, making your experience not only creative but also culturally meaningful.
During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to design and personalize your own mulberry paper, decorating it with fresh flowers, leaves, and natural elements to create a one-of-a-kind piece. Then, take your creativity a step further by crafting a custom paper lantern, a charming keepsake that reflects your artistic flair and the beauty of Lao tradition.
As you work alongside skilled artisans, you’ll gain deeper insight into the cultural significance of Saa paper and its role in daily life and local businesses. The Porsaa Learning Center proudly supports a local paper company that supplies sustainable products such as gift boxes, menu covers, minibar paper lists, and notebooks used in hospitality and tourism across the region. By participating in this workshop, you’re also contributing to the preservation of traditional crafts and the empowerment of local communities.
After a fulfilling and inspiring creative session, you’ll return to your hotel in the afternoon, carrying with you not only your handmade creations but also a deeper appreciation for Lao culture and craftsmanship.
