Meet The Weaving Sisters from Salavan Province in Southern Laos and discover our family’s tradition of Katu weaving in Luangprabang.
We are two sisters passionate about preserving and sharing our family’s traditional Katu weaving. We brought our weaving techniques and traditions to Luang Prabang, where we offer hands-on workshops for visitors who want to learn about this living craft.
Our textiles are woven on a traditional Katu backstrap loom. One special feature of our family’s weaving is incorporating glass beads into the warp to create intricate patterns. We also make soft, naturally dyed textiles used for everyday clothing. Mayn of our traditional patterns have their own names and during the workshop, we will share what we know about some of their meanings and the stories.
During the day you will learn how the Katu backstrap loom works, practice basic weaving techniques, and work with us to create your own scarf.
You can weave a short scarf of approximately 100cm or a little longer depending on your progress . You will have time to work at your own pace and experience the patience and the skill involved in traditional Katu weaving.
The workshop is relaxed and personal with time to ask questions, talk with us about weaving and learn directly from us. You can take your own handmade scarf home as a keepsake of your experience in Laos.
Enjoy a homemade lunch prepared by us a long with a local snack.
