  • 【Awaji Island Onions】
  • Onions, which began to be cultivated on Awaji Island about 130 years ago (around 1890), have become one of the signature ingredients of Awaji Island, the 'Land of Food.' Awaji Island, the largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, has a mild climate throughout the year with an average annual temperature of 16°C and long sunshine hours, making it an ideal place for growing onions, which dislike the cold. In addition, various conditions have combined to make it one of the leading onion production areas in the country, such as the thriving dairy industry which allowed for soil preparation using cow manure. Awaji Island onions are grown as a secondary crop to rice, and the practice of alternating between rice and onions, as well as adding cow manure to the rice fields, helps create soil where onions can easily grow. Furthermore, the soil of Awaji Island, which was formed by rising from the seabed long ago, is rich in marine minerals, which condenses the sweetness and nutrients into the onions.
  • 【Highlights】
  • Around the onion fields of Awaji Island Hamada Farm, not only onions but also vegetables that represent Awaji Island, such as lettuce and cabbage, are grown by neighboring farmers. While double cropping, such as rice followed by vegetables, is common, triple cropping is more typical in the Mihara Plain where Awaji Island Hamada Farm is located, with rice cultivation from summer to autumn, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, and cabbage from autumn to winter, and onion fields spreading from winter to spring. The fields and paddies, where rice and vegetables are grown without rest throughout the year, have various colors of crops, looking just like a patchwork quilt. The scenery of the fields, which changes in color and pattern depending on the season, is also a highlight.
