Relatively unexplored, Aomori's verdant landscapes, famous festivals, and World Heritage sites can all still be called hidden gems. Hiking through unspoiled wilderness, riding in trains heated by stoves, and sampling delectable seafood and sake are just a few of its attractions.

Generally, we like to spend 3 nights minimum in any city we visit to leisurely explore and feel more of a local vibe. However, you could easily see the sights of Aomori City in 1 night and 2 days, or even do a day trip if you want to hustle and head off elsewhere in the prefecture.

Aomori is famous for the spectacular Nebuta Festival with giant illuminated lanterns, its status as Japan's leading apple producer, and significant Jomon period archaeological sites like the Sannai-Maruyama ruins. The region also offers stunning natural landscapes, historic sites such as Hirosaki Castle amidst cherry blossoms, fresh seafood, and traditional hot springs (onsen).

Aomori boasts a world-famous summer festival featuring parades of enormous, illuminated lantern floats depicting historical and mythological figures. You can also explore a major archaeological site showcasing ancient Jomon period settlements, including large pit-houses and stilt-houses, and visit a striking modern museum featuring large-scale works by local and international artists.

For the nicest balance of weather that avoids the wettest months, the best time to visit Aomori is during spring and autumn. The months of May, June, September, and October offer comfortable temperatures for sightseeing and also enjoy the seasonal colors of spring and fall.
