Leave Lisbon in the direction of Santarém, standing on the top of a plateau, is a belvedere over the fertile wetland region, the River Tagus valley known for farming, cattle breeding, and bullfighting. The city incorporated the lands of the Order of Christ, which supported the Portuguese Discoveries financially.
Visit the Church of the Santissímo Milagre, from the 16th century, and see the Host in blood. Or if you prefer head to the medieval Santarém castle where you have a view over the Tagus river and Santarém's valley.
Next, go to Tomar, the former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar. Climb up to the Templar castle and discover the monumental work of the Convent of Christ. The Charola (Rotunda) is the oldest part. This Templar chapel was built in the 12th century, like the castle, which was at the time the Kingdom’s most up-to-date and advanced military set-up, inspired by the fortifications of the Holy Land.
It was converted into a Chancel during the restoration works ordered by King Manuel I in the 16th century, when the complex gained the architectural splendor, kept intact to this day, which earned it World Heritage Site status. To visit the Convent, buy tickets in advance.
The last stop before returning to Lisbon is Fátima, a city placed in the center of Portugal, where it is possible to visit the Sanctuary of Fátima, a Catholic pilgrimage site. The Sanctuary of Fátima, formally titled by the Catholic Church as Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, is a Marian sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima.
The Sanctuary of Fátima is a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its foundation, namely the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children in 1917.
