Product Info
Nuremberg was first mentioned in a document in 975. Within a few centuries, the city grew to become the second largest in medieval Germany and one of the most important commercial cities in Europe. On this private walking tour, you will experience what remains visible of this history today in the alleys, walls, and churches of the Old Town.
We start at Old City Hall, where law was administered and politics was conducted in the Middle Ages. From here, we walk through the alleys of the old imperial city up to the Imperial Castle. The emperors of the Holy Roman Empire ruled from this castle. The view from above shows why this exact location was chosen and how the city developed around the castle over the centuries.
On the way, we pass the Sebaldus Church and the Lorenz Church, two of the oldest churches in Germany, the Hauptmarkt with the Schöner Brunnen, and the Albrecht Dürer House, where Nuremberg's most famous artist lived and worked. At each stop, you will learn what role the place played in the Middle Ages and what original features of it are still preserved today.
Because that is the second story that this walking tour tells: On January 2, 1945, over 90 percent of the Old Town was destroyed. Much of what you see today was deliberately rebuilt after the war. I will show you on site exactly where the line between the original and the reconstruction lies. The tour is private. You determine the pace and the focus. At the end, I will be happy to give you personal recommendations for restaurants, museums and anything else that will enhance your stay in Nuremberg.
