-Attraction Introduction-

Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine

Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is the head shrine of approximately 3,000 Kumano shrines throughout Japan, and is the foremost of the "Kumano Sanzan" (Three Sanzan of Kumano). It is dedicated to the deity Iezu Miko-Okami, and its history dates back to before the Heian period. In 2004, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the Camino de Santiago in Spain, one of only two pilgrimage routes worldwide to receive this honor. Unlike other shrines, Hongu deliberately retains its understated and rustic natural wood tones, without vermilion lacquer. The roof is covered with 30 centimeters of cypress bark, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere that fully embodies Japanese Shinto aesthetics. The shrine's belief in the three-legged crow "Yatagara" (Eight-Tailed Crow) originated here, and it is also the origin of the Japan National Football Team crest.

【Ōsaihara Ōtorii】

The original site of the shrine, "Ōsaihara," was relocated after a major flood in 1889. A 33-meter-high vermilion wooden torii gate was built on the site, which is currently the largest wooden torii gate in Japan. Standing amidst the lush green fields, it is extremely impressive and is the most representative photo spot of the trip.

【Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine】

Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine is one of the three sacred mountains of Kumano. It originated from the natural worship of Nachi Falls and is dedicated to the deity Fusumi Okami of Kumano. The name "Fusumi" is pronounced the same as "knot" in Japanese, so this shrine is a famous matchmaking shrine in Japan, mainly for praying for good marriage, career success, and family harmony, and is very popular with tourists.

Qing'an Ferry Temple

Seigan-do Temple, adjacent to Nachi Taisha Shrine, is a renowned temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism in Japan. Its history dates back to the Nara period, over 1300 years ago. It is also the first stop on the pilgrimage route of the Thirty-Three Temples of Kannon in Western Japan, marking the starting point for Buddhist pilgrimages throughout Japan. The two temples stand side-by-side, a rare example of Shinto and Buddhism coexisting in one place, preserving the complete appearance of the area before the Meiji era's policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism. Within the grounds stands a sacred camphor tree, nearly a thousand years old, with a natural hollow in its trunk, considered a powerful energy site.

【Hitaki Shrine】

Hitaki Shrine is the inner shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, and its enshrined object is extremely rare—the Nachi Falls itself is considered the deity, rather than an ordinary natural landscape. Since ancient times, ascetics and pilgrims have traveled great distances to worship here, and legend has it that drinking the holy water from the falls can prolong life.

Nachi Falls boasts a drop of 133 meters, a width of 13 meters, and a depth of 10 meters. The water cascades down a sheer cliff, its roar echoing through the valley, creating a magnificent spectacle. With a flow rate exceeding one ton per second, it is Japan's highest single-drop waterfall and, along with Kegon Falls and Fukuroda Falls, is considered one of the "Three Great Waterfalls of Japan," also listed among the "100 Views of Japan." An optional 300 yen fee allows access to the viewing platform for a close-up panoramic view of the falls.

Hakuja Benzaiten Shrine

Bentenjima, an isolated island in Nachi Bay, Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture, is the most mystical and energetic attraction in the area. The island enshrines the white serpent Benzaiten, considered in traditional Japanese belief to be the messenger of the goddess Benzaiten, symbolizing wealth, rebirth, and longevity. An ancient saying goes, "Seeing the white serpent brings great fortune." Standing on the shore, the vermilion torii gate stands atop the rocks in the sea, against the backdrop of the azure Pacific Ocean of Nachi Bay, creating a striking visual effect.
