Yes, you need to purchase a ticket to visit Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama. The temple is primarily divided into the Sogenchi Garden and the Grand Abbot's Hall, and you can purchase tickets separately for each or opt for a combined ticket. The Sogenchi Garden is a must-visit strolling garden that uses borrowed scenery, while the Grand Abbot's Hall allows you to experience the Zen atmosphere and admire exquisite painted screens. We recommend purchasing the combined ticket for a complete experience of Tenryu-ji's history and beauty.
The Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama is a representative landmark of Kyoto, spanning the Katsura River with the Arashiyama mountain range as its backdrop. Its scenery is captivating throughout the four seasons, with each offering a unique charm – cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and serene snowscapes in winter. It's particularly ideal for taking memorable photos in a kimono, creating beautiful travel memories. You can admire the magnificent natural scenery from the bridge or take a stroll along the Katsura River to soak in the relaxed Kyoto atmosphere. The area around Togetsukyo Bridge also has many shops and restaurants, making it a starting point and central hub for exploring Arashiyama.
The Sagano Scenic Railway (Sagano Sightseeing Line) is renowned for the natural beauty of the Hozugawa River gorge it traverses, making it particularly popular during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. It offers a unique charm of riding a vintage train and is perfect for enjoying the scenic views. For a different experience, you can consider taking a Hozugawa River boat cruise downstream to admire the scenery from the water. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle to leisurely explore the Bamboo Grove or walk through Arashiyama's main attractions, enjoying different ways to tour the area.
When heading to the main sightseeing areas of Arashiyama, there are three main stations to choose from, each offering a different level of convenience: 1. JR Saga-Arashiyama Station: This is the closest station to the Bamboo Grove and Tenryu-ji Temple; you can reach them by walking after exiting the station. 2. Keifuku Arashiyama Station (Randen): Located in the heart of Arashiyama's shopping street, it's close to Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryu-ji Temple, and offers the experience of riding a retro tram. 3. Hankyu Arashiyama Station: Situated south of Togetsukyo Bridge, you'll need to walk across the bridge to reach the main attractions. Considering these, JR Saga-Arashiyama Station and Keifuku Arashiyama Station are the most convenient choices for reaching the core areas.
Overall transportation convenience in the Arashiyama area is quite good, with a variety of transport options available for travelers: Trains: This includes the JR San-in Line, Keifuku Electric Railroad Arashiyama Line (Randen), and Hankyu Arashiyama Line, connecting Kyoto city center to Arashiyama. Buses: Kyoto city buses offer multiple routes, making it convenient to travel within Arashiyama and its surrounding areas. No, you cannot reach Arashiyama directly by Keihan Electric Railway. You will need to alight at 'Gion-Shijo Station' or 'Sanjo Station' on the Keihan Line, walk to Hankyu 'Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station' or 'Kyoto-Sanjo Station', transfer to the Hankyu Railway, and then change trains at 'Katsura Station' to take the Hankyu Arashiyama Line to 'Hankyu Arashiyama Station'. Therefore, a total of one transfer is required.
In addition to riding the Sagano Scenic Railway, there are several other recommended ways to explore the Arashiyama area and deeply experience the local charm: Walking: Stroll along the Katsura River or wander through the famous Bamboo Grove to feel the tranquility and unique atmosphere of nature. Hozugawa River Boat Cruise: Take a wooden boat downstream to admire the canyon scenery on both sides, enjoying an exciting and fun rafting experience. Rickshaw: Be pulled by a rickshaw driver, weaving through alleys and attractions while listening to the driver's local stories and enjoying a personalized tour. Cycling: Rent a bicycle to freely travel between attractions, discover hidden alleyways and beautiful scenery, and enjoy more flexible itinerary planning.
