Visitors typically need about 60 to 90 minutes to complete the round trip along Charenka's Path at Cape Kamui. This main trail leads to the lighthouse, offering stunning panoramic views of the sea and dramatic cliffs, including the iconic Kamui Rock formation.
For those preferring not to self-drive, joining an organized day tour departing from Sapporo is a highly convenient option. Such tours provide seamless transportation to Cape Kamui, Otaru, and Yoichi, eliminating the hassle of public transport planning or renting a car. Some tours also include the service of an English or Chinese-speaking guide or driver-guide.
The special cherry blossom route for this tour is available during the spring season. For Cape Kamui itself, the best visiting season for clear weather and stunning views of the 'Kamui Blue' ocean is generally from late spring to early autumn (typically May to October), when the weather is mild and visibility is optimal.
The Otaru Canal area is famous for its historic charm. Highlights include walking along the picturesque canal lined with gas lamps and renovated stone warehouses, which now house shops and restaurants. Recommended activities include taking a canal cruise, visiting the Otaru Music Box Museum, and exploring the Kitaichi Glass Otaru for exquisite glass art.
Before visiting the Yoichi Nikka Whisky Distillery, it's helpful to know it's the first distillery built by Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru. Visitors can learn about traditional whisky production methods, explore historic buildings, and enjoy whisky tastings. Checking the distillery's operating hours in advance and considering reservations for guided tours is recommended.
Cape Kamui is renowned for its dramatic coastal scenery and the mesmerizing 'Kamui Blue' sea. Key photo opportunities include capturing the panoramic views from the observation deck near the lighthouse, photographing the 'Women's Prohibited Gate' leading to the cape, and framing the iconic Kamui Rock against the vast ocean backdrop.
Otaru offers delicious fresh seafood, especially sushi and kaisendon, which are highly recommended. You can also try Otaru Beer. For shopping, explore Sakaimachi Street, known for its unique glassware, charming music boxes, and various local confectionery shops where you can find delightful souvenirs and treats.
Yoichi is famous for its fruit, especially cherries and apples, so look for seasonal fresh fruits, juices, and ciders. Given the presence of the Nikka Whisky Distillery, whisky and related merchandise, such as whisky chocolates or original glassware, make excellent and authentic souvenirs unique to the region.
