Our shop, Yamagami Dyeing Shop, is located in Murakami City in northern Niigata Prefecture. We have been dedicated to dyeing here for over 360 years. Even as the times have passed, we have continued to create dyes that are close to people's lives. We aim to create products that you can feel at ease in, products that are always nearby and that warm your heart when you see them.
Northernmost tea dyeing experience
Our original "Northern Limit Tea Dye" is a plant dye using Murakami tea, a specialty of Murakami City. A white handkerchief is squeezed with rubber bands or disposable chopsticks, a pattern is created, and then the fabric is dyed with Murakami tea. The unique, subdued color and the charm of stencil dyeing are evident.
Tour of Machiya architecture too!
Murakami City is home to many "machiya" (traditional Japanese townhouses), a style of architecture unique to castle towns. Our store, too, has been designated a tangible cultural property in 2007, as it "retains the characteristics of the time well." We are open to the public throughout the year during business hours, so please feel free to visit us.
