With guidance from a Hizenhama townscape guide, you’ll explore Sakagura-dōri (Sake Brewery Street) and visit local breweries that proudly produce Kashima’s renowned sake, discovering the many charms of the area.
And here’s a unique highlight Japan’s first sake bar directly connected to a train platform!: At the sake station “Hizenhama Station HAMABAR”, enjoy a tasting of three local sake varieties. Savor a flight of three selected Kashima sake along with cream cheese marinated in sake lees.
For guests who do not drink alcohol, sweet amazake, soft drinks, and sweets are also available.
Stop by the mystical “Underwater Torii Gate” floating in the Ariake Sea
The underwater torii gate of Ouo Shrine dates back about 300 years.
According to legend, a corrupt local official was once abandoned on Okinoshima Island (Tara Town), which becomes submerged at high tide, as punishment for his misdeeds. Just then, a giant fish called Namiuo appeared and rescued him.
Deeply repentant after this miracle, the official built Ouo Shrine and its torii gate standing in the sea.
Even today, many people visit the gate to pray for plentiful catches and safety at sea, and it continues to be cherished by the local community. The scenery changes dramatically with the tides, and its mystical atmosphere—where you can feel the pull of the moon—has made it a popular and much-talked-about sightseeing spot.
