To protect themselves from French occupation in the 1940s, communist guerrillas known as the Viet Cong dug tens of thousands of miles of tunnels using their bare hands and simple tools and expanded further during the American War in the 1960s. Located 75 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a complex underground network of 250 km of tunnels and rooms in the town of Cu Chi. This massive underground network in Vietnam has been preserved by the Vietnamese government and has become a popular tourist attraction.
