Kaike Onsen welcomes foreign visitors, but adherence to local customs is expected. Key rules include rinsing your body thoroughly before entering the hot spring, refraining from taking photos in bathing areas, and maintaining a respectful demeanor. Tattoo policies vary by establishment, so it is advisable to check with your specific accommodation in Kaike Onsen regarding their guidelines.
In traditional Japanese onsen like Kaike Onsen, it is customary to bathe nude in the communal baths. Before entering the main bath, you must use the showering stations to wash your body thoroughly. Small modesty towels are allowed for covering oneself while walking to and from the bath, but they should not be submerged in the hot spring water itself. Swimsuits or underwear are generally not permitted in the communal bathing areas.
For a comfortable and beneficial experience at Kaike Onsen, it is recommended to soak for short periods, typically 5-10 minutes at a time. After a soak, take a break to cool down before re-entering the bath. The total soaking time can vary, but generally, 30-60 minutes divided into several shorter sessions is common to enjoy the therapeutic benefits without over-exertion. Always listen to your body.
Upon arrival at Kaike Onsen, remove your clothes in the changing room and store them in a locker. Before entering the hot spring, proceed to the showering area and thoroughly wash your body with soap and water. Enter the bath slowly and carefully, avoiding splashing others. Do not bring towels into the main bathwater. After soaking, you may rinse off again before drying yourself in the changing room. Maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere.
For your stay at Kaike Onsen, it's advisable to prepare comfortable clothing for relaxation within the ryokan, as well as personal toiletries if you have specific preferences, although most accommodations provide basic amenities. While towels are typically supplied by your hotel or ryokan, you might consider bringing a small, personal modesty towel for convenience when moving between the changing room and the bath. Any necessary personal medications should also be packed.

Its distinctive Taisha-zukuri architectural style is a national treasure. Key attractions include the impressive main hall, the massive shimenawa rope at the Kagura-den, and the tranquil grounds that invite peaceful contemplation. It is believed that all Shinto gods gather here annually in October.
