When participating in whitewater rafting on the Kiulu River, it's recommended to wear shoes that will get wet and won't easily come off. Examples include river trekking shoes, sandals (with heel straps for security), flip-flops (with good grip and a secure fit), or old sports shoes. These shoes provide sufficient grip to prevent slipping and offer protection in the water. Please avoid wearing new or expensive shoes to prevent them from getting wet or damaged.
Non-swimmers can also participate in whitewater rafting on the Kiulu River. A life jacket will be required for the entire duration of the activity, and you will be guided by professional rafting guides to ensure everyone's safety. Guides will conduct a safety briefing before departure and provide instructions on basic rafting techniques and emergency procedures. As long as you follow instructions, you can enjoy the rafting experience with peace of mind, even if you're not a strong swimmer.
The actual on-water activity time for whitewater rafting on the Kiulu River is about 1.5 to 2 hours, with the exact duration varying slightly depending on the water level and the group's progress on the day. Including the pre-activity safety briefing, gear fitting, and time for changing after the activity, the overall rafting experience takes about half a day. This activity is one of the core experiences in a Sabah day tour.
In addition to the thrilling whitewater rafting experience on the Kiulu River, this tour will take you to famous landmarks in Sabah. These include the historic Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, where you can appreciate its unique architectural beauty; and the magnificent Sabah State Mosque (Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu), where you can admire its Islamic architectural style from the exterior. The tour also includes a delicious Malaysian-style lunch.
When participating in whitewater rafting on the Kiulu River, it is recommended to bring a set of clean clothes to change into, a towel, and personal items that can fit into a waterproof bag, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. As your clothes will get wet during rafting, please ensure that valuables like mobile phones and cameras are properly waterproofed or stored safely. Shower facilities are usually available at the activity site.
Participants in whitewater rafting on the Kiulu River must strictly follow the instructions of the professional guides. A life jacket and helmet must be worn at all times, and you must listen to the guide's paddling commands. Please do not stand up or jump into the water arbitrarily during the rafting. Travelers with heart disease, high blood pressure, who are pregnant, or have recently undergone surgery are advised to consult a doctor to assess their suitability for participation. Minors usually require adult supervision.
The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge is a famous landmark with a century of history on Gaya Island, Sabah. It is known for its traditional wooden plank deck and its swaying nature, spanning the Tamparuli River and connecting villages on both banks. This suspension bridge is not only an important passage for daily local residents but also a unique spot for tourists to experience local culture and capture scenic views, exuding a nostalgic charm.
The Sabah State Mosque is generally open to tourists during non-prayer times, usually from morning to afternoon. However, it's recommended to follow on-site announcements or your guide's instructions. A modest dress code must be observed when visiting. Women typically need to wear a headscarf and long sleeves and trousers, while men should wear long trousers. Appropriate robes and headscarves are usually available for borrowing at the entrance. Please maintain silence and respect local religious customs.
