Donghwasa Temple is a historic Silla-era temple located in Donghak-dong Valley, where Pokpogol, Bindaegol, and Susutgol valleys converge. It is the headquarters of the 9th Parish of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded in 493 (the 15th year of King Soji's reign) by Monk Geukdal and was originally called Yugasa. Later, in 832 (the 7th year of King Heungdeok's reign), the royal preceptor Simji renovated it. It is said that the name was changed to Donghwasa because paulownia flowers were in full bloom around the temple, even though it was winter.
Most of the existing temple buildings were constructed during the renovation in the era of King Yeongjo, including the Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongyeongjeon Hall, Cheontaegak Pavilion, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Bongseoru Pavilion, Simgeomdang Hall, Chilseonggak Pavilion, Sansingak Pavilion, Eunghyanggak Pavilion, Woneumgak Pavilion, and Cheonanmun Gate. Subsidiary hermitages include Geumdangam, Biroam, Naewonam, Budoam, Yangjinam, and Yeombulam.
