[LUX NIGHT Kumamoto 2024: Hosokawa Gracia and 400 Years of Time]
This admission ticket allows you to have a special experience of the Hosokawa clan's unique samurai culture (Higo Hosokawa culture) at Suizenji Jojuen Garden, a nationally designated scenic spot and historic site created by the Hosokawa clan of Higo Domain.
Suizenji Jojuen Garden, which normally closes at 5pm, will be open at night for a limited time, allowing you to experience the 400-year-old Higo Hosokawa culture as you wander through the gardens, filled with autumn leaves and flowers in full bloom.
The garden is decorated with bamboo objects, depicting various scenes from the life of Gracia Hosokawa. You can enjoy entertainment including controlled illuminations, while the story is explained through an audio app available in four languages.
[Experience]
This plan allows you to experience the Higo Koryu tea ceremony, a school of tea ceremony that has been handed down in Kumamoto for over 400 years, during a special night-time event held for one month only at Kumamoto's famous tourist spot, Zenji Jojuen. After the head of the Higo Koryu school, who is related to the Hosokawa family, will guide you through the tea ceremony style in the quaint Kokin Denju Room, you will enjoy matcha green tea and sweets.
[Kokin Denju no Ma]
The Kokin Denju no Ma, a quaint thatched building standing within the garden, is a place of learning where in 1600, the first head of the early modern Hosokawa clan, Yuusai (Fujitaka), imparted the secrets of the Kokin Wakashu to Hachijonomiya Tomohito. It was gifted by the Hosokawa clan to the Hachijonomiya family, but was returned to the Hosokawa family in 1871 and dismantled for preservation. It was moved to the garden in 1912 and has been open to the public since 2010.
