At Sakunami Onsen, like most traditional Japanese onsen, it is customary to bathe nude in the communal hot spring baths. Before entering the baths, visitors must wash thoroughly at the designated shower areas. Swimsuits are generally not permitted in public onsen. If a private bath option is available, you may have more flexibility, but nudity is still the common practice for a full onsen experience.
Private baths at Sakunami Onsen are designed for a more intimate and personal bathing experience, often for couples or families. While they offer greater privacy compared to communal baths, the primary purpose remains relaxation and cleansing. General onsen etiquette regarding cleanliness, such as showering before entering and refraining from adding soap to the bathwater, still applies. Always observe the specific rules provided by the onsen facility.
Traditional onsen in Japan, including some facilities at Sakunami Onsen, have historically restricted entry for individuals with tattoos due to cultural perceptions. However, policies are gradually becoming more lenient. Some onsen might allow entry if tattoos are small and can be completely covered with waterproof patches. For larger tattoos, visitors may be directed to use private baths if available. It is advisable to confirm the specific tattoo policy directly with the Sakunami Onsen facility you plan to visit prior to your arrival.
