Mt. Omuro offers unique charm throughout the year. Spring (approx. March-May) features new greenery and cherry blossoms. Summer (approx. June-August) is lush with greenery. Autumn (approx. September-November) is adorned with colorful foliage. A special event, the 'Yakiyama' (mountain burning), held annually from late winter to early spring (around the second Sunday in February), showcases a distinct scorched landscape. You can choose a suitable time to visit any time of the year to experience its different facets.
The Yakiyama event at Mt. Omuro is a traditional cultural activity with a long history. Its purpose is to burn off dead grass, promoting new growth and maintaining the mountain's verdant landscape and ecological balance. It also serves as an effective way to prevent forest fires and eliminate pests. The landscape after the burning is unique. As new greenery gradually covers the scorched slopes, it creates a beautiful, distinct seasonal transition, making it a significant cultural experience in the Izu region.
To fully experience Mt. Omuro, we recommend allocating about 1.5 to 2 hours. The cable car ride to the summit takes approximately 5 minutes. Once at the top, walking the trail around the crater rim takes about 30-40 minutes. Additionally, there are archery facilities and observation points at the summit for visitors to rest and take photos. At the foot of the mountain, you can also explore souvenir shops and dining areas.
The peak tourist seasons for the Izu Peninsula are typically spring (approx. February-May) and autumn (approx. September-November). Spring is renowned for its Kawazu cherry blossoms, the new greenery of Mt. Omuro, and coastal flowers. Autumn offers pleasant weather, ideal for admiring fall foliage and enjoying outdoor hot springs. Summer (July-August) is a popular season for beach activities, while winter allows for hot spring enjoyment, plum blossom viewing, and seasonal agricultural experiences. Each season offers distinct charms.
The Izu Peninsula offers a rich variety of winter experiences. Besides enjoying various famous hot springs for warmth and relaxation, you can admire plum blossoms and early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms, experiencing a touch of pink romance in winter. Some tours may also include seasonal agricultural harvest experiences, such as picking fresh shiitake mushrooms and grilling them on the spot at places like the Kanō-no-Mori Forest Leisure Campsite, adding unique fun and memories to your winter trip.
There are several convenient transportation options from Tokyo to the Izu Peninsula. You can take the JR train system, such as the 'Limited Express Odoriko' (Super View Odoriko) or 'Odoriko' (Odoriko) trains, which go directly to stations like Ito, Izu-Kogen, and Shimoda. Participating in a specially arranged bus day tour is also an extremely convenient choice. It saves you the trouble of planning your own transportation and transfers, allowing you to comfortably reach various famous Izu attractions directly and enjoy your trip with ease.
Jogasaki Coast is famous for its unique volcanic rock coastline and magnificent ocean views, having been awarded a two-star rating by the Michelin Green Guide. The Kadowaki Suspension Bridge is a must-visit highlight. It spans between sea-eroded cliffs, allowing visitors to feel the sea breeze while standing on the bridge. From a high vantage point, you can overlook the vast Pacific Ocean and witness the impressive sight of waves crashing against the rocks below. It is highly recommended to experience its unique geological beauty in person.
The Shuzenji Onsen area is not only a historic hot spring town but also a two-star attraction recognized by the Michelin Green Guide. In addition to soaking in hot springs, you can stroll through the tranquil 'Bamboo Forest Path' to experience its unique Japanese ambiance. Visit the historic 'Shuzen-ji Temple' to learn about its cultural heritage, or walk along the Katsura River to admire the small bridges, flowing water, and traditional architecture. The autumn foliage here also attracts many visitors.
