The Kurobe Gorge Sightseeing Train departs from Unazuki Station. To reach Unazuki Station, travelers typically take local trains from Toyama Station. Toyama Station itself is a major transport hub, easily accessible via Shinkansen from cities like Tokyo, making the start of the journey convenient.
The one-way journey on the Kurobe Gorge Sightseeing Train from Unazuki Station to Keyakidaira Station, which is the farthest point, takes approximately 80 minutes. This allows passengers ample time to enjoy the breathtaking scenic views of the gorge, characterized by deep valleys, lush forests, and numerous bridges and tunnels.
The Kurobe Gorge Sightseeing Train operates seasonally, typically running from mid-April to late November, with exact dates varying each year. It is renowned for its spectacular autumn foliage, but also offers stunning vibrant greenery in summer and fresh landscapes in spring. The train usually closes during winter due to heavy snowfall and harsh conditions.
Passengers on the Kurobe Gorge Sightseeing Train can marvel at a series of dramatic natural vistas, including deep ravines, towering cliffs, and the emerald waters of the Kurobe River. Notable highlights often include crossing iconic bridges like the Shin-Yamabiko Bridge and observing natural hot springs and waterfalls nestled within the pristine gorge.
Completing the entire Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from one end to the other generally takes between 6 to 10 hours. This duration accounts for transfers between the various unique modes of transport, such as cable cars, buses, and ropeways, as well as time for stops at popular attractions and viewing points along the route.
Due to significant changes in altitude and often unpredictable mountain weather, visitors should wear layers when exploring the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Essential items include a waterproof and windproof outer layer, comfortable walking shoes, and accessories like a hat, gloves, and sunglasses. For spring visits to the Snow Corridor, warm clothing is particularly crucial.
The impressive snow walls of the Tateyama Snow Corridor (Yuki-no-Otani) are a seasonal attraction, typically accessible from mid-April to late June. Visitors can experience them by walking through the specially designated corridor, which is located near Murodo Station on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Murodo is reached via a series of mountain transport vehicles from either Ogizawa or Tateyama Station.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is highly recommended for its distinct seasonal beauty and diverse mountain landscapes. In spring, the towering snow walls are a world-famous spectacle. Summer showcases vibrant alpine flora, while autumn transforms the scenery with brilliant fall foliage. The combination of unique transport experiences and breathtaking views makes it a truly memorable destination.
