We set up tours based on the average autumn foliage conditions, but the best viewing time may differ depending on the weather conditions this year.
Kyu-nen-an Temple is typically open for a limited period in autumn, with the peak viewing time for its maple leaves usually occurring from mid to late November each year. The Forest of Autumn Colors at the Environmental Art Forest experiences similar timing for its foliage. During this period, thousands of maple trees transform the forest into a vibrant spectacle of red, orange, and yellow hues, making it an ideal time to witness the stunning autumn scenery.
Kyu-nen-an Temple is a nationally designated scenic spot and is only open to the public for a specific duration in the fall. Entry may require advance reservation or queuing, and visitor numbers are controlled. It is advisable to confirm the opening dates, times, and admission procedures for the current year in advance. Please adhere to on-site instructions, maintain a quiet atmosphere, and help preserve the historical site and garden environment by avoiding touching plants or entering restricted areas.
The Forest of Autumn Colors at the Environmental Art Forest is renowned for its thousands of maple trees. We recommend strolling along the forest paths for an immersive experience surrounded by foliage. The 'Sunlit Path,' where sunlight filters through the maple leaves, is a popular photo spot. Ascending to the observation deck offers panoramic views of the entire red-leaf forest, providing an excellent vantage point for capturing breathtaking vistas.
Saga Farm Restaurant emphasizes the use of local ingredients from Fujichō town, especially seasonal vegetables. The lunch is typically served in a healthy and hearty home-style manner, with dishes adjusted according to the seasonal availability of ingredients. You can expect a variety of mountain vegetable dishes such as tempura vegetables, simmered vegetables, vegetable salads, and main courses made with local rice, offering an authentic rural dining experience.
It is recommended to visit Kyu-nen-an Temple first, allocating about 1 to 1.5 hours to fully appreciate its Japanese garden and historic architecture. Afterward, proceed to the Forest of Autumn Colors at the Environmental Art Forest. This area is larger, so allocate 2 to 3 hours for a leisurely walk along the maple paths, enjoying a forest bath, and taking photos. Overall, half a day to a full day will allow for a comprehensive experience of these two main attractions.
Besides enjoying the autumn foliage, while walking in the Forest of Autumn Colors at the Environmental Art Forest, keep an eye out for the creative art installations along the trails, which are cleverly integrated into the natural landscape. Additionally, some areas feature resting spots or viewing platforms where visitors can quietly soak in the forest's ambiance, listen to birdsong, and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
The classic photographic angles at Kyu-nen-an Temple are primarily found within its Japanese garden. Particularly, shooting from inside the buildings outward, framing the deep red maple leaves within the doorway, creates a picturesque scene. Other popular spots for capturing the unique autumn colors include the reflections in the garden pond, the contrast between moss and red leaves, and the pathways winding through the trees.
During the autumn opening period, Kyu-nen-an Temple typically attracts a large number of visitors, and surrounding roads may be subject to traffic control. If you are arriving by bus or tour group, you may need to alight at a designated stop and walk a certain distance to reach the temple. It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and allow ample time for the walk.
