  • Jogi-san Saiho-ji

An 800-year-old historic temple with deep ties to the Taira clan, a prominent family in Japanese history. It is now a sacred site housing numerous cultural assets that protect the local community. Located on the main route between Miyagi and Yamagata, Saiho-ji is about 30 kilometers from Sendai City, roughly a 50-minute drive from Sendai Station. Situated 5 kilometers from Okura Dam, it is known as the 'Home of Taira Refugees.' Since ancient times, many devotees have visited to pray to the Buddha for the fulfillment of rare wishes. It is said to be particularly effective for finding good matches and safe childbirth. Visitors often make wishes while receiving prayers. Additionally, the Emperor's grave, said to contain the relics of Emperor Antoku, is a famous spot for matchmaking. The temple grounds feature a Sanmon gate, bell tower, mausoleum, water purification pavilion, and a guardian shrine, all registered as tangible cultural properties. Other highlights include the five-story pagoda and the main hall, both built entirely from Aomori cypress. With about 1 million visitors annually, the area features well-developed tourist facilities, including a temple-front town. The majestic five-story pagoda and Sanmon gate, along with the traditional shops lining the street, retain a nostalgic atmosphere. The famous 'Triangle Fried Tofu' is a must-try specialty when visiting.

  • Ginzan Onsen

A hot spring town nestled in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku region. Surrounded by mountains, this small town once flourished as a silver mining site in the 17th century, which is how it got the name Ginzan (Silver Mountain) Onsen. Ginzan Onsen preserves wooden Western-style buildings from the Taisho to early Showa periods. The retro streetscape and snow-covered winter scenery are filled with a romantic atmosphere. Ginzan Onsen is also the setting for the globally popular Japanese TV drama 'Oshin.' It is also rumored to be an inspiration for the bathhouse in the Japanese animation 'Spirited Away.' The retro, romantic ambiance created by the rows of hot spring inns, combined with the beautiful snow, attracts travelers from all over the world every year.

FAQ

1. When is the best time to visit Ginzan Onsen for a memorable experience?

Ginzan Onsen offers distinct charm throughout the year. Winter, from December to March, is highly popular for its snowy, nostalgic scenery, reminiscent of a Ghibli film. Autumn, in late October to November, provides stunning fall foliage, while spring, from April to May, brings fresh greenery. Evenings in any season are particularly magical, with the gas lamps illuminating the traditional streets, creating a captivating atmosphere.

2. How much time is typically needed to explore Ginzan Onsen thoroughly?

Most visitors find that 2 to 3 hours are sufficient to explore Ginzan Onsen's main street, browse the unique shops, take photographs, and perhaps enjoy a relaxing foot bath. If you plan to dine at one of the local eateries or visit a public bath, allowing 3 to 4 hours would provide a more comfortable and unhurried experience. This duration allows ample time to soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

3. What makes visiting Ginzan Onsen a unique and worthwhile day trip experience?

Ginzan Onsen is renowned for its enchanting Taisho-era architecture and picturesque river setting, making it a truly unique destination. The town transforms into a fairy-tale scene, especially in winter when snow blankets the traditional wooden ryokan. It offers a nostalgic escape, exceptional photo opportunities, and a chance to immerse yourself in authentic Japanese hot spring culture within a beautifully preserved historical environment, providing a distinctive day trip.

4. What is the proper etiquette for enjoying the hot springs at Ginzan Onsen?

Before entering any hot spring at Ginzan Onsen, it is customary and essential to thoroughly wash your body at the designated showering area. Guests should enter the onsen completely naked, as swimsuits and underwear are generally not permitted. Tie up long hair to keep it out of the water. Avoid loud conversations to maintain the peaceful atmosphere, and refrain from bringing cameras or phones into the bathing area. These practices ensure a respectful experience for everyone.

5. Are there specific tattoo policies to be aware of when visiting hot springs near Ginzan Onsen?

Many traditional Japanese hot springs, including some establishments in the Ginzan Onsen area, historically have strict policies against visible tattoos. While attitudes are gradually changing and some places might permit small tattoos if they can be covered with a bandage, it is generally advisable to inquire directly with individual ryokan or public baths about their specific policies before visiting. Private onsen rooms, if available, can be an alternative.

6. What are the convenient transportation options to reach Ginzan Onsen from Sendai?
