For snorkeling in Xiaoliuqiu, it is recommended to bring your own swimwear or beach shorts, a towel, a change of clothes, sun protection products, and sunglasses. The activity provider will supply basic snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel, and life jacket. Depending on the season, a rash guard will be provided in summer, and a wetsuit in winter, ensuring your comfort in different weather conditions.
Xiaoliuqiu is suitable for snorkeling year-round, but the period from April to October offers the most stable weather and high water visibility, making it the most recommended snorkeling season. Sea turtles can be seen in Xiaoliuqiu almost all year round. They are particularly active during high tide when they come ashore to feed. During these times, you have a higher chance of encountering them in tidal pools or while snorkeling. It's advisable to visit during clear morning hours for the best visibility.
Xiaoliuqiu has several well-known snorkeling spots that are popular for sea turtle observation. These include Meiren Cave, Vase Rock, and Lobster Cave, all of which are commonly included in snorkeling tours. These areas boast rich coral reef ecosystems, clear waters, and are frequent feeding grounds for sea turtles, offering visitors opportunities for close encounters.
While snorkeling in the waters around Xiaoliuqiu, the most commonly observed sea turtle species is the green sea turtle, which primarily feeds on seagrass and algae. You may also have the chance to see the rarer hawksbill sea turtle and loggerhead sea turtle. These sea turtles are protected marine life in Taiwan, and the opportunity to observe them swimming freely in their natural environment is a highlight of snorkeling in Xiaoliuqiu.
To protect the sea turtles in Xiaoliuqiu, visitors must adhere to the 'three no' principles: do not touch, do not chase, and do not feed them. Maintain a distance of at least 5 meters from sea turtles to avoid disturbing their natural behavior. Additionally, flash photography is prohibited, and visitors should take all their trash with them to help preserve the marine environment and ensure a safe habitat for the turtles.
To get to Xiaoliuqiu from mainland Taiwan, you will primarily need to take a ferry. You can first take the High-Speed Rail, Taiwan Railways, or bus to Donggang Pier in Pingtung. From Donggang Pier, you can choose to take a ferry operated by a private company or the public ferry to Baishao Village Pier in Xiaoliuqiu. The ferry ride takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes. If you are driving, there are parking lots available near Donggang Pier.
