Green Island, or Ludao, is renowned for its exceptional water clarity, diverse coral reefs, and abundant marine life, making it a prime diving spot. Its volcanic topography creates unique underwater landscapes like coral walls, underwater hot springs, and vibrant ecosystems. Divers can encounter various fish species, sea turtles, and even hammerhead sharks during specific seasons, offering memorable underwater experiences for all levels.
While stinger suits are not typically a universal requirement for diving in Green Island, it's advisable to wear a full-body wetsuit for protection. Wetsuits help with thermal insulation in cooler waters and provide a barrier against potential skin irritations from some marine life or accidental contact with coral. Your dive center will provide suitable equipment, including wetsuits, and can advise on specific local conditions.
Prioritizing safety is crucial for a rewarding scuba diving experience. Key guidelines include always diving with a certified buddy, adhering to your experience level limits, monitoring your air supply, and performing safety stops during ascent. Listen carefully to your dive instructor's briefing, understand hand signals, and never hold your breath while ascending. Ensure all equipment is properly fitted and functioning before entering the water.
A Green Island scuba diving trip offers immersive encounters with its rich underwater world. Participants can explore stunning coral gardens, witness unique geological formations like the famous "Great Mushroom Rock" coral, and observe diverse tropical fish, moray eels, and sea snakes. The experience often includes professional guidance, provided equipment, and optional GoPro photography services to capture your underwater journey.
Green Island provides several convenient local transportation options for visitors. The most popular choice is renting a scooter or electric scooter, which allows for flexible exploration of the island's scenic routes and attractions. Alternatively, bicycles are available for rent, especially for shorter distances. Some accommodations may offer shuttle services, and limited taxis or shared vans can also be arranged, though they are less common than scooters.
The main way to reach Green Island from Taiwan's main island is by ferry or by small plane. Ferries depart regularly from Fugang Port in Taitung, offering a scenic journey across the sea. For those seeking faster travel, daily flights are available from Taitung Airport to Green Island Airport, providing aerial views of the coastline before landing.
The primary departure point for ferries traveling to Green Island is Fugang Port, located in Taitung City on Taiwan's southeastern coast. From Fugang Port, multiple ferry operators provide regular services to Nanliao Harbor on Green Island. It is advisable to book ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to secure your passage.
To reach Green Island from Kaohsiung, travelers typically take a train or bus to Taitung, and then transfer to a ferry. From Kaohsiung, take a Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) train to Taitung Station. Upon arrival in Taitung, proceed to Fugang Port, which is a short taxi or bus ride away, to catch a ferry to Green Island. This combines land and sea travel for the journey.
