We recommend planning for 3 to 5 days for an in-depth exploration of the Izu Peninsula. You could plan a 2-day trip focusing on areas like Shuzenji Onsen and Izu Kogen. If you wish to experience Atami Onsen, Kawazu Cherry Blossoms (seasonal), or visit Jogasaki Coast, 3 to 5 days would be more ample, allowing you to relax and enjoy your time. The Tokai Bus Pass offers 2-day or 3-day options, making it convenient to plan for different durations.
The Izu region boasts a rich variety of hot springs. Key types include the rustic atmosphere of Shuzenji Onsen, the seaside charm of Atami Onsen, and the unique water quality of Ito Onsen. For the experience, you can choose to stay at a hot spring ryokan for private or public baths, and some day-use onsen facilities also offer single bathing services. Each hot spring area has its own distinct history and natural scenery, allowing visitors to choose based on their preferences.
We recommend allocating about 2 to 3 hours to visit Mt. Omuro. This includes taking the cable car up the mountain, walking the rim trail around the crater (Obachi Meguri) for 360-degree panoramic views, and trying archery or relaxing at the teahouse on the summit. If you wish to take the chairlift, an additional 10-15 minutes should be factored in for waiting and riding time.
The Izu region is very suitable for winter travel. The climate is relatively warm, and there are fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed hot spring experience. Recommended activities include: soaking in hot springs to warm up, especially seaside onsen; viewing the winter-limited Kawazu Cherry Blossoms (late February to early March); visiting Mt. Omuro for clear winter vistas; and savoring seasonal seafood. Some areas also have winter illuminations, adding a romantic ambiance.
The Izu Peninsula offers different charms throughout the year. In spring (February-March), you can see Kawazu and Yoshino cherry blossoms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for beach activities and water sports. Autumn (October-November) is perfect for viewing autumn leaves, such as in Shuzenji. Winter (December-January) is suitable for hot springs and escaping the cold. We recommend choosing based on your interests. The Tokai Bus Pass allows for easy access to various attractions.
The best seasons to visit Mt. Omuro are spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) when the weather is pleasant and visibility is clear. In spring, you can see the vibrant green vegetation on the crater walls, and in autumn, the mountain scenery turns reddish. Annually around winter (February), a controlled burning ritual takes place, creating a unique landscape. On clear days, you can enjoy magnificent views of Mt. Fuji, the Izu Seven Islands, and Sagami Bay from the summit.
The most convenient way to get to Izu Panorama Park from Atami or Ito is by taking the train to Izunagaoka Station, then transferring to a local bus or taxi. Tokai Bus operates routes from Izunagaoka Station to the park entrance. We recommend using the Tokai Bus All-Area Pass for unlimited bus rides, making it easy to reach the park without the hassle of transportation planning.
In Shizuoka, spring (March-April) is great for cherry blossom viewing and strawberry picking. Summer (July-August) is suitable for visiting the seaside or mountains to escape the heat and enjoy activities around Mt. Fuji. Autumn (October-November) allows for autumn foliage viewing and tasting new tea, with comfortable weather. Winter (December-February) is ideal for hot springs and skiing (in some areas). Overall, spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit, and the Tokai Bus Pass can be used to explore the Izu Peninsula.
