Question 1

How can I purchase and use an eSIM when traveling in Taiwan?

Accepted Answer

An eSIM is a virtual SIM card that allows you to activate mobile network services without a physical card. When traveling in Taiwan, you can choose to pre-order an eSIM through online platforms like KKday before your departure. Upon arrival in Taiwan, simply scan the QR code to activate it, enjoying Chinese customer service support and flexible cancellation, which eliminates language communication barriers. Before activation, please ensure your phone supports eSIM functionality and have your passport information ready for registration. This allows you to get connected immediately upon landing, which is very convenient.

Question 2

Are there any recommended unlimited data plans for traveling in Taiwan?

Accepted Answer

Yes, major telecom operators in Taiwan offer unlimited data plans specifically for travelers. These plans are especially suitable for travelers who require extensive internet usage, such as frequent map checking, social media sharing, video calls, or work-related needs. You can purchase them at airport telecom counters, city branches, or pre-book them through online platforms. Unlimited plans typically come with various duration options, so it's advisable to choose based on your trip length and internet usage habits to ensure seamless connectivity throughout your journey.

Question 3

What are the differences between SIM card services from major Taiwanese telecom providers, and how should travelers choose?

Accepted Answer

Major telecom providers in Taiwan, such as Chunghwa Telecom and Far EasTone, generally offer excellent network coverage and speeds in urban areas and popular tourist spots. The SIM card plans offered by each provider are similar, with differences potentially lying in signal stability in remote mountainous areas or outlying islands. Travelers can choose based on their destinations, refer to other travelers' experiences, or ask counter staff for recommendations. If you primarily plan to stay in cities, choosing any mainstream telecom provider will ensure a high-quality service.

Question 4

What is the network signal stability like for SIM cards during Taiwan's New Year's Eve celebrations?

Accepted Answer

During major festive events like New Year's Eve in Taiwan, telecommunication networks may experience high usage due to large crowds in specific areas. This can lead to temporary slowdowns or unstable connections in some hotspots. Although telecom operators will reinforce network equipment deployment, it is still recommended for travelers to purchase and activate their SIM cards early. If your itinerary includes New Year's Eve hotspots, consider using networks from multiple major telecom providers as a backup, or pre-download offline maps and other information.

Question 5

What is the complete process for purchasing a SIM card at a Taiwanese airport upon arrival?

Accepted Answer

Upon arriving at a Taiwanese international airport, you can purchase a SIM card at telecom counters located in the arrival hall or near the baggage claim area. The process typically includes: 1. Finding a telecom provider's counter (e.g., Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone). 2. Presenting your passport and a second form of identification (such as an entry stamp or boarding pass; may be required in some cases). 3. Informing the staff about your travel duration and data needs to select a suitable plan. 4. Completing the payment. 5. The counter staff will assist you in replacing your SIM card and testing the network functionality. The entire process is usually quick and convenient, with dedicated assistance provided.

Question 6

How can foreign tourists apply for a mobile phone number while traveling in Taiwan?

Accepted Answer

For short-term visitors to Taiwan, the most common and convenient way to get a mobile number is by purchasing a prepaid SIM card or eSIM. This essentially provides you with a temporary local number for use in Taiwan. You just need to present your valid passport and other supporting documents (like a visa or entry stamp) at major telecom branches or airport telecom counters. After selecting a plan that suits your travel duration and data needs, the telecom provider will help you activate the service, allowing you to make calls and access the internet during your stay. It's recommended to pre-book through KKday to save time queuing and communicating on-site.

Question 7

Where can I purchase prepaid SIM cards in Taiwan?

Accepted Answer

Prepaid SIM cards in Taiwan can be purchased at various convenient locations. The most common and recommended method is to buy them directly at the telecom service counters at international airports like Taoyuan, Songshan, or Kaohsiung upon arrival. Additionally, you can purchase them at major telecom branches across Taiwan (e.g., Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone). While some convenience stores sell prepaid top-up vouchers, you still need to visit a telecom branch with your identification to activate a new SIM card. You can also consider pre-ordering through online travel platforms like KKday before your trip and pick up the SIM card at the airport or activate an eSIM upon arrival.

Question 8

What are the top-up methods available after a Taiwanese SIM card's prepaid plan expires?

Accepted Answer

When your Taiwanese prepaid SIM card plan expires or runs out of balance, there are several ways to top it up. You can visit any major telecom branch in Taiwan and tell the staff your phone number to proceed with the top-up. Many convenience stores also offer top-up services, where you can purchase top-up cards or use in-store machines. Some telecom operators also provide online top-up services, allowing you to use your credit or debit card through their official website or app to quickly and conveniently extend your service period or add more balance.

Question 9

What are the recommended internet plan options for short-term travel in Taiwan?

Accepted Answer

There are abundant internet plan options for short-term travel in Taiwan, and you can choose based on your duration of stay and data usage. Common options include: daily unlimited data plans, ideal for heavy internet users; fixed data plans offering a specific amount of data, suitable for light users; and multi-day unlimited plans, such as 3-day, 5-day, or 7-day options, providing unlimited internet for a set period. eSIM is also a convenient choice. It's recommended to consider your trip length, expected frequency of internet use, and purpose to select the most suitable plan.

Question 10

What is the network signal coverage like on the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) when using a SIM card?

Accepted Answer

The SIM card network signal coverage along the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) route is generally good. Major telecom operators in Taiwan have well-established base stations along the high-speed rail lines, ensuring stable 4G or 5G signal reception for most of the journey. This allows travelers to browse the web, use social media, or handle general messages conveniently. However, signals might experience brief weakening or interruptions when passing through tunnels or certain remote sections. Overall, it does not significantly impact basic internet usage during the trip. For high-definition video streaming, it's advisable to download content beforehand.
