When traveling to Mount Aso, the primary concern is the volcanic activity alert. Before your trip, be sure to confirm the accessibility of the Nakadake crater and volcanic gas concentrations, and follow the instructions of on-site staff. Mountain weather can change rapidly, so it's advisable to bring warm clothing, rain gear, and comfortable walking shoes. Visiting the Mount Aso crater and experiencing horse riding at Kusasenri each offer unique charms, and your choice can depend on personal preference. Crater sightseeing allows you to get up close to the majestic power of an active volcano, witnessing the rising steam and sulfur crystals—an excellent opportunity to experience nature's might, though access is dependent on volcanic activity. Kusasenri, on the other hand, is a vast meadow set against the backdrop of the magnificent Mount Aso. Here, you can stroll, have a picnic, or enjoy a horse riding experience, embracing a leisurely pastoral ambiance, ideal for photography. Both allow you to appreciate different facets of Mount Aso's natural beauty.

Mount Aso offers different charms throughout the year. For the best scenery, late spring (around April-May) or autumn (around October-November) are recommended. In late spring, the grasslands are vibrantly green and full of life; in autumn, you'll see golden pampas grass against clear blue skies, creating a picturesque scene. The weather during these seasons is pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities. To avoid crowds, consider visiting on weekdays or planning your trip during the off-peak seasons of late autumn or early spring. While Mount Aso can be covered in snow in winter, temperatures are low, and some facilities or roads might be affected by snow.
