Universal Studios Hollywood, California Park Guide
What’s the smoothest way to tour Universal Studios Hollywood? Universal Studios Hollywood is divided into two main areas: the Upper Lot and the Lower Lot.
They’re connected by four long escalators. This might not sound like a big deal until you actually have to go back and forth. It can take up a lot of time, so my advice is to avoid jumping between the two areas repeatedly.
If you don’t have an Express Pass and you’re not sure which ride to head to first, or how to plan the day efficiently, just follow my suggested route. It’s designed to be the smoothest way to experience the park without wasting time in lines or walking back and forth.
Step 1: Start at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ is located in the Upper Lot, and it’s very close to the main entrance. If you can, head there within the first 30 minutes of early entry, while the crowds are still small.
Start with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™, then ride Flight of the Hippogriff™ next. After that, make time to browse Ollivanders™ Wand Shop.
Once you’ve finished these three, it’s a good time to move on. Because by then, the area will usually start getting much more crowded.

Not done yet? Want more time in Hogsmeade? No worries!
If you haven’t had enough of the Wizarding World yet, whether it’s more rides, more shopping, or more photos, you can come back later. After around 4:00 PM, the crowds start to thin out, and the sunlight becomes perfect for photos.
That’s also the best time to stroll around the shops more slowly, so don’t rush. For now, focus on other popular attractions while the park is still busy. Then, return later when the area is calmer.
Step 2: Studio Tour

The best part about Universal Studios Hollywood is that it’s also a real Hollywood film studio.
The Studio Tour takes you behind the scenes to see iconic movie sets and scenes come to life, right in front of you. You’ll experience famous moments from films like Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Jaws, and Fast & Furious.
Step 3: Head to the Lower Lot

Since the most thrilling rides are all in the Lower Lot, head straight down the long escalators right after the Studio Tour and secure your spot in line.
Don’t waste time. This is where the excitement really ramps up!
First up, tackle the Lower Lot’s most popular and thrilling ride: Transformers™: The Ride-3D.
Next, ride Revenge of the Mummy™ – The Ride, followed by Jurassic World™ – The Ride.
Step 4: Return to the Upper Lot

After finishing the three Lower Lot attractions, head back up to the Upper Lot. Once you step off the escalators, you’ll see the massive entrance to The Simpsons Ride. That’s a great place to start.
While you’re there, check the app for showtimes. If the timing lines up, head straight to the classic WaterWorld show. It’s one of Universal Studios Hollywood’s must-see performances.

Next, you can head to DreamWorks Theatre 4D and the Minions area. You can even combine these two attractions. They’re close by and easy to fit in between other rides.
Step 5: Visit the Harry Potter Shops

The shops in the Wizarding World are absolutely worth taking your time to explore, and even the restaurant decor is super photo-worthy.
Once you’ve finished the rides, you can finally relax and stroll through the area at your own pace.
Universal Studios Hollywood Park Area: Super Nintendo World

Challenge Bowser and his crew in the all-new Mario Kart™ ride, then battle it out in Bowser™’s Castle.
Put on your Power-Up Band™ to join interactive games and collect coins and points throughout the land.
You can also grab a meal with Mario and friends at Toadstool Cafe™, and shop for exclusive souvenirs at 1-UP Factory™.
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
Super Nintendo World’s crown jewel is Bowser’s Castle, and if you’re at Universal Studios Hollywood, Mario Kart™: Bowser’s Challenge is a must-ride!
The castle is basically a giant Mario museum. Every corner is packed with game-perfect details, and you’ll be snapping photos non-stop.
Then the ride starts and boom! It’s AR meets real track, and the adrenaline hits immediately.
You put on a Mario helmet, strap on the goggles, and suddenly you’re racing through the Mario Kart course, battling Bowser like a true champ. It’s chaotic, intense, and totally worth it.
Must-See Attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, California
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★★

The moment you step into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, there’s only one place you have to go first: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™.
Let’s be real: who didn’t dream of studying at Hogwarts as a kid? And now, finally, we Muggles get our chance.
Board the ride and enter Hogwarts Castle, where the magic starts immediately. The moving portraits watch you pass, the staircases feel straight out of the movies, and you’ll walk through iconic locations like Dumbledore’s office and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
Then, buckle up because you’ll soar into the action, encountering Quidditch matches, Dementors, and magical creatures along the way.
The 3D visuals are incredibly detailed and immersive, making this ride an absolute dream for Harry Potter fans. Trust us, you’ll walk out buzzing with excitement and probably planning to ride it again.
Flight of the Hippogriff™
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★

Remember what a Hippogriff looks like? With the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a horse, it’s one of the most iconic magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe.
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry and Hermione even rode one to rescue Sirius Black. And now it’s your turn.
Flight of the Hippogriff™ is a gentle outdoor coaster that glides over Hagrid’s pumpkin patch, offering surprisingly nice views along the way. It’s not intense or scary at all, making it a great choice for kids, families, and first-time riders.
Studio Tour
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★★

The Studio Tour is the signature attraction of Universal Studios Hollywood. This is something no other Universal park in the world can replace.
This isn’t just a theme park; it’s a real, working film studio with decades of Hollywood history, and it’s still actively used for movie and TV production today.
The Studio Tour takes you straight into the heart of filmmaking, pulling back the curtain and dropping you right into the worlds of your favorite movies. It’s classic Hollywood magic, and an absolute must for first-time visitors and film lovers alike.

The Studio Tour lasts about 60 minutes and takes you through real, working movie sets, including full-scale street scenes and residential backlots. True film fans might even recognize locations the moment they roll into view.
Here’s a little spoiler (don’t worry, it only makes it better): you’ll come face-to-face with the Boeing 747 crash site from War of the Worlds, an actual plane wreckage laid out right in front of you.
You’ll also pass the iconic Bates Motel from Psycho and… yes, that killer may appear right before your eyes.

The real highlight comes from the 360-degree 3D effects, where movies don’t just play in front of you; they happen all around you.
What does that feel like? Imagine entering a subway station when water suddenly starts leaking from the ceiling… then pouring… until the entire station is flooded. And you’re right in the middle of it.
Or picture cruising past a calm lake when the water turns red… and out of nowhere, a great white shark lunges straight toward you. It’s intense, shocking, and genuinely terrifying in the best way possible.
And that’s only part of it. What else happens? Well… that’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself.
Transformers™: The Ride-3D
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★★

Transformers™: The Ride-3D easily ranks among the top three most popular attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood. If the epic battles between the Autobots and Decepticons had your heart racing in the movies, get ready because now you’re part of the fight.
Once inside, you’ll board the ride vehicle alongside Bumblebee and plunge into a four-story-tall 3D battlefield, teaming up with the Autobots to save the Earth.
Powered by a cutting-edge 3D simulator, the visuals feel incredibly real, like you’ve stepped straight into a Transformers movie.
Fast, intense, and totally adrenaline-pumping, this ride delivers non-stop action from start to finish.

After the ride, be sure to stick around for meet-and-greets with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. They’re surprisingly chatty, playful, and always up for a photo.
Then, there’s Megatron, who’s every bit as intense and intimidating as he is in the movies… proceed with caution.
Character appearance times vary, so be sure to check the on-site schedule to catch them at the right moment!
Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★★

Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride is known as California’s fastest indoor roller coaster, and even though the track is short, it’s insanely intense, so get ready to scream.
This ride launches you forward and backward at high speed, and just when you think you’ve got it under control… it drops you unexpectedly. Don’t underestimate it. This one hits hard and fast.
And when you’re done, be sure to snap a photo with the towering mummy waiting outside. It’s the perfect ending to a terrifyingly awesome ride.
Jurassic World – The Ride
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★

Jurassic World – The Ride is kind of like a water adventure version of the volcano ride at Leofoo Village Theme Park.
It starts calm and scenic, but once you enter the tunnel, the dinosaur roars hit you like a shock. Right when you think you’re about to become dinosaur lunch… the ride drops you straight down!
Just a heads-up: this ride gets very wet, so your clothes will likely get splashed. Be sure to bring a poncho or raincoat if you want to stay dry!
Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★

Hollywood wouldn’t be complete without the world’s most beloved little troublemakers: the Minions! Just like the Minions themselves, this ride is super cute and perfect for kids.
Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem is a 4D theater experience, so you’ll need to wear 3D glasses. Once you’re seated and the safety bar is secured, you’ll join the Minions on a hilarious adventure full of surprises and laughs.
It’s fun, light-hearted, and a great break between the big thrill rides.

The ride itself isn’t scary, but the gift shop afterward definitely is!
It’s a whole sea of bright yellow cuteness, and it’s so easy to lose control and buy everything in sight. Your wallet may suffer, but your heart will be happy.
And don’t forget the must-do moment: take a photo with the Minions! It’s the perfect souvenir of your visit.
The Simpsons Ride™
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★

The Simpsons Ride™ is a 3D simulator that takes place inside a small theater room, but don’t let that fool you. Once you’re strapped in, you’re suddenly transported into the world of Springfield.
At first, it might seem like it’s going to be just another ride, but once the journey begins… it gets surprisingly thrilling! It’s fun, fast-paced, and full of classic Simpsons chaos.
Trust me, this one is worth the hype. You’ll definitely want to try it!

Classic Shows at Universal Studios Hollywood
WaterWorld™
Must-Ride Rating: ★★★★★

WaterWorld™ is one of Universal Studios Hollywood’s most iconic live shows, based on the movie Waterworld. The park brings the film’s explosive action to life with cinematic sound and lighting effects, but in a full live-performance style.
With water as the main theme, the show features massive explosions, high dives, and thrilling stunts, all packed into an adrenaline-fueled spectacle that’s perfect for action lovers.

Just from the name, you already know WaterWorld™ is going to get you wet, especially if you sit in the front three rows.
And the staff? They’re not shy at all about splashing the audience. They’ll soak you like it’s their job (because it is).
If you don’t want to get drenched, my tip is to sit further back and to the right. That’s the safest spot to stay dry.
Must-Visit Area at Universal Studios Hollywood
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ is the biggest highlight for most visitors. Once you enter the park, you’ll want to head straight there first!
Universal Studios Hollywood makes it easy by placing this area close to the entrance, so you won’t have to walk far before the magic begins.
Soon after you arrive, you’ll see the large sign that reads “Please Respect The Spell Limits.” Once you pass through, you’re officially stepping into the wizarding world. Welcome to Hogwarts!
The Hogwarts™ Express

As soon as you enter the park, you’ll spot the Hogwarts™ Express on your right, one of the most iconic elements of the Harry Potter story. This is the famous train that departs from Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station, traveling between London and Hogwarts.
The best part? There’s a conductor on board who will happily take photos with you. He also speaks with a charming British accent, just like in the films. It’s a super fun photo spot, so don’t forget to stop by and take a picture!

Besides the must-ride attractions like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ and Flight of the Hippogriff™, there are so many other things in this area you absolutely can’t miss.
From iconic photo spots to magical shops and experiences, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ is packed with must-see highlights.
Let me walk you through the best ones. You won’t want to miss any of them!
Ollivanders™ Wand Shop

After you finish the rides, the first thing you should do is head straight to Ollivanders™ Wand Shop.
It may look like a souvenir store, but it’s so popular that you’ll often need to queue just to get inside. Once you’re in, you’ll get to meet the wand shop owner, the same one from the movies, who’s over 300 years old!
Ollivanders perfectly recreates the magical setting from the books and films, and Harry Potter fans will absolutely go wild.
During the experience, the wand maker will select one lucky guest to receive a custom wand fitting, so be ready for some truly magical moments!
Performances in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™

If you’re lucky while exploring the park, you might catch the hourly live performances in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™.
You’ll see favorites like the Frog Choir and the magical duel between Viktor Krum and Madame Maxime, all taken straight from the Harry Potter story.
The best part? After the show, you’ll often have a chance to take photos with the performers, so it’s a must-see experience for any fan.
CityWalk

CityWalk is the pedestrian shopping district located just outside the entrance of Universal Studios Hollywood. Besides major brand stores like A&F and Sephora, there are plenty of restaurants for dining, including the famous Pink’s Hot Dogs, which has a branch here in LA.
The plaza also hosts live performances, making it a lively and bustling entertainment zone.
My tip? Save CityWalk for after the park closes at 6 PM, so you can shop and grab dinner without rushing.
Just be warned: Once the park closes, CityWalk gets super crowded, so expect lots of people.

You’ll also find the famous Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., the iconic restaurant themed after the movie Forrest Gump. This CityWalk location is often less crowded than other branches, so you won’t have to wait in long lines like you might elsewhere.
The restaurant is decorated in a classic American style, filled with movie photos and props, making it a fun place to explore even while you wait for your food. If you’re a fan of the movie, it’s definitely worth a visit!

That giant King Kong statue is one of CityWalk’s most famous landmarks.
The entire street is like a mini tour of LA’s most iconic neighborhoods, bringing together the best vibes from places like Rodeo Drive, Melrose Avenue, Venice Beach, and Hollywood Boulevard. It also has shops, restaurants, and entertainment all in one spot.
It’s a great place to stroll, shop, and soak up the LA atmosphere before or after your theme park day.

Finally, I have to recommend CityWalk at night. That’s exactly why I suggest waiting until after 6 PM to come back and explore. When the lights turn on, CityWalk becomes even more magical and captivating, with a strong, classic Hollywood-American vibe.
The whole street is filled with the lively energy of Southern California, making it the perfect place to end your day with shopping, dining, and entertainment.

The fountain plaza right in front of the main square is another small spot I highly recommend staying for until nighttime.
Once the lights turn on, the whole area becomes stunning, especially with the water jets lighting up in sync.
Universal Studios Hollywood: Must-Buy Souvenirs Checklist
Must-Try Food & Snacks
Pumpkin Juice

Although the taste of pumpkin juice is famously controversial in the Harry Potter world (lol), you can’t become a true Hogwarts student and quit at this checkpoint!

Actually, the taste of pumpkin juice varies a lot depending on the person.
Some say it tastes more like sweet plum juice, and you can barely taste the pumpkin at all. But since you’re already at Universal Studios, why not give it a try? Just remember to shake it before drinking, because there’s usually some pumpkin-pulp-like sediment at the bottom.
If you’ve tried it before, feel free to come back and share your thoughts. This magical flavor is definitely a topic worth discussing
Krusty Burger

If you’re hungry while exploring Springfield, Krusty Burger is the perfect spot to save your stomach. Of course, theme park food isn’t really about being gourmet. It’s about being fun and visually impressive!
The decor is full of eye-catching details, and even the staff wear adorable uniforms. You’ll feel like you’ve truly become a resident of Springfield while enjoying your meal.
One thing to note: Krusty Burger portions are pretty large, especially for women. If you’re not super hungry, it might be better to share a meal between 2–3 people, otherwise you might not finish it and it could feel like a waste.
Minion-Themed Snacks / Cotton Candy

Every shop and food cart in the park is filled with cute, themed snacks that look so adorable you won’t even need a recommendation. You’ll naturally want to buy them.
The most eye-catching treats are definitely the Minion-shaped cupcakes and the Minion candy apples. Yes, a whole apple coated in syrup and decorated to look like a Minion; so cute you’ll feel guilty just leaving it on display!
After a full day at the park, these sweet snacks aren’t just a sugar boost. They’re also a little dose of happiness.

Besides the Minion cupcakes and candy apples, you can also find Minion-themed cotton candy. Walking around Universal Studios with a giant Minion cotton candy stick is so eye-catching. You’ll definitely get lots of attention (and maybe even a few jealous looks)!
Butterbeer

If there’s one thing you absolutely must try at Universal Studios, it’s Butterbeer™!
People say it tastes like caramel milk, with a fizzy soda base topped with a sweet, creamy foam. Some even jokingly call it the reason wizards get diabetes (just kidding), because it’s that sweet. Whether it’s too sweet depends on your taste.
Even though it’s called “beer,” Butterbeer™ is completely non-alcoholic, so kids under 18 can drink it too. So don’t worry, this one’s safe for the whole family to enjoy!
Must-Buy Souvenirs
Harry Potter Wand

Stepping into Hogsmeade feels like you’re about to start your journey to Hogwarts and do your back-to-school shopping. Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or not, you’ll still get totally excited.
The main highlight of this area is definitely Ollivanders™ Wand Shop, and you’ll even need to queue just to enter.
Once inside, you get to meet the wand shop owner. The same one from the movies who’s over 300 years old! It’s a truly magical experience and a must-visit for anyone in the Wizarding World.

This shop is the most popular store in all of Hogsmeade, and it perfectly recreates the setting from the books and movies.
Once you step inside, everyone instantly feels immersed, like they’re a powerful wizard or witch choosing their wand. Whether you can name every wand or not, they have them all here!
It’s a place where fans of all ages can get totally carried away (in the best way).

If you don’t want a wand that was used by a character in the books, that’s totally fine. There’s also a Wand Selection Guide to help you choose the perfect wand for yourself.
When you check out, you can ask the counter for a Hogsmeade map, which shows all the locations where you can cast spells.
You can bring your wand around the park and practice magic at these spots, and each location has a “gatekeeper” to guide you. How cool is that? It’s like you’re officially a Hogwarts student!
Along the way, there are also wand carts selling wands. Although they don’t have the same magical atmosphere as the store, they usually have fewer crowds and clearer displays. If you left the shop feeling like you missed out, this is a great alternative.
Themed Shirts / Tops

T-shirts are probably the most practical souvenir you can buy (lol). Seriously though, how can you go to a theme park and not bring home at least one shirt?
What’s even better is that each area of Universal Studios has a totally different vibe, so when you wear the shirt, it feels like you’ve stepped into a whole new world and become part of the scene. It’s like you’re officially in the story!

In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, you can find every Hogwarts house uniform and accessory, from robes, scarves, sweaters, to gloves. They even sell the iconic sweaters that Mrs. Weasley knitted for Harry and Ron, which is honestly a pretty impressive level of detail.
There are several shops in the area that sell these outfits, and one of the best is Dervish and Banges, located right behind the Owl Post. It’s the ultimate Quidditch shop, where you can easily find all the gear to support your favorite house team.
Whether you’re a Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw fan, you’ll leave fully dressed and ready for Hogwarts!

The Minion store’s clothing selection is even more fun and exciting. They have shirts for everyone, adults, kids, and even toddlers, so it’s basically impossible not to find something cute. It’s the kind of merch that steals the hearts of both parents and children.
When you wear it, you’ll feel like you’ve suddenly gotten 10 years younger. It’s just that adorable. Seriously, the cuteness level is so high that your wallet won’t stand a chance!
Character-Themed Mugs

The moment you step into the Minion gift shop, you’ll see walls and walls of mugs. And that’s not an exaggeration.
The entire display is so adorable that it’ll make you feel like a kid again. If you don’t buy at least one, are you even doing Universal Studios right?
And don’t think there’s just one style. There are so many different designs that you’ll fill your shopping basket in no time. It’s impossible to resist!
There are so many options that you’ll have a hard time choosing. When you come here, you’re not worried about not finding anything to buy. You’re worried about how to stop yourself from spending too much!

The Starbucks inside Universal Studios Hollywood also releases park-exclusive merchandise, and the limited edition Universal Studios cup is one of the most popular souvenirs.
Once you leave the park, you won’t be able to find these Universal cups anymore, only the regular California ones.
For visitors who collect Starbucks cups, this is a must-buy. The USH-exclusive tumblers and ceramic mugs feature simple, elegant designs with iconic Hollywood or California symbols: minimalist yet full of souvenir value.
If you’re in the park, definitely swing by Starbucks and check them out!
Charms / Keychains

Charms and keychains are a big deal at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Compared to character-themed trinkets, many young Americans actually prefer collecting small, stylish limited-edition pins. That’s why the park offers a wide variety of designs that are affordable, low-key, and still super collectible.
These subtle souvenirs are a huge hit and one of the most popular items to buy at Universal.
All kinds of Hogwarts banners and crests are made into portable charms and keychains, so you can carry them with you everywhere. Compared to shirts or mugs, these are much more low-key and easy to bring home.
They’re perfect not only for yourself, but also as souvenirs to give to friends and family.
Fashion Accessories

Before you even enter Universal Studios, you might think, “What would I ever do with those over-the-top backpacks or novelty glasses?” If you’re like me, you’d swear you’d never buy them.
But don’t be too quick to judge. Once you step into this magical little kingdom, everything suddenly makes sense.
All the flashy, cute, and exaggerated merch starts to feel perfectly reasonable, and the only thought in your head becomes: “I need to buy this and take it home!”
As one of Universal Studios’ biggest stars, Minion merchandise is incredibly diverse. You can find everything from head-to-toe accessories, all themed around these lovable little yellow guys.
When you see all the soft, squishy Minion-themed items, it’s hard not to want to take them all home!
Global Universal Studios Map
Besides Universal Studios Hollywood in California, there are many other Universal Studios parks around the world waiting for you to explore.
Each park not only has its own exclusive themed lands but also offers a unique experience shaped by local culture.
Even if you’ve visited other Universal parks before, every trip will still feel fresh and exciting because each one has something new to discover!
How to Plan an Itinerary for Hollywood, Los Angeles?
If there’s one city in the world where you can dream without limits, it’s definitely Los Angeles!
Here, you can step right into the real movie studios at Universal Studios, stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and hunt for the handprints left behind by your favourite stars.
If you’re a true fan of La La Land, you absolutely can’t miss Griffith Park. The iconic scene where the two leads dance “A Lovely Night” under the sunset sky was filmed right here.
Whether you want to check in at the romantic filming location or simply enjoy the stunning night views, Griffith Park is a must-visit.
So what other LA attractions should you add to your itinerary? Keep reading and follow along with the guide!
