_What You Can Expect_

Shy farmhand Nemorino is in love with Adina, a wealthy landowner who barely notices him. When the travelling quack Dr Dulcamara rolls into town selling a "love potion", which is really cheap wine, Nemorino spends everything he has on it. With a rival sergeant, a rushed wedding and a surprise inheritance, the whole town gets swept up in the chaos before true love wins.

Director Simon Phillips sets Donizetti's comedy in 1915 rural Australia, with a set built from corrugated iron and colourful, painterly costumes. It's warm, funny and full of beautiful melodies, and makes a great first opera.

Running time: about 2 hours 20 minutes, including one interval. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
