— Attraction Information —

  • Stonehenge Special Access
Built nearly 5,000 years ago, Stonehenge is the most popular prehistoric monument in the world. Most visitors to the site are not allowed direct access to the stones. With Premium Tours, you get that access, with a private viewing of the mysterious monoliths. You will enter the stone circle itself and stand beside the mighty Sarsen rocks towering above us. Your guide will explain the history of this ancient site, pointing out the altar, slaughter, and heel stones, above which the sun rises dramatically on the summer solstice. There will be time to enjoy the peace, away from the crowds, as you experience Stonehenge at its most mystical and atmospheric best. Not to be missed!
  • Lacock
Lacock is a little-known, picturesque village dating back to the Saxon era. Many of the beautiful buildings originally formed part of an extensive monastic complex and are now owned by The National Trust. So pretty is the village that it has provided the setting for many movies and television dramas including Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and more recently Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Take a delightful walk before enjoying an optional breakfast or early supper at The George Inn. The George Inn dates back to the 14th century and serves up classic British food. (Food/drink not included)
  • Bath
Bath is famous for its elegant Georgian architecture. During your panoramic tour of Bath, you will be enchanted by the town's beautifully proportioned street. Your guide will also conduct an optional walking tour to show you a charming 17th-century Sally Lunn tea room and the Jane Austen Museum, among many other hidden treasures. You'll see Bath Abbey and the much-photographed Pulteney Bridge, modeled on the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence. There will be plenty of time to visit Bath Abbey, or to shop and explore. Then, you will enter the magnificent Roman Baths (if the upgrade option is selected), where over one million liters of boiling water still burst free from the hot springs every day. The Roman Baths is the best preserved Roman spa from the ancient world.

FAQ

1. Who built Stonehenge and what was its original purpose?

Stonehenge was constructed by several generations of prehistoric peoples over thousands of years, primarily by Neolithic farmers and later by Bronze Age communities. Its exact purpose is still debated among archaeologists, but theories suggest it served as a burial ground, a ceremonial site for rituals related to the solstices, or a complex astronomical observatory.

2. How were the massive stones of Stonehenge transported and erected?

The smaller 'bluestones' were quarried from the Preseli Hills in Wales, a distance of over 250 kilometers, likely transported by rolling them on sledges over land and possibly by rafts along waterways. The larger 'sarsen stones' were sourced from Marlborough Downs, about 30 kilometers away. It is believed that these massive stones were moved using a combination of sledges, ropes, and timber rollers, then erected using a system of levers, earth ramps, and A-frame timber structures.

3. Is Stonehenge chronologically older than the Egyptian pyramids?

Yes, Stonehenge's construction began around 3000 BC, with its main phases continuing for over 1,500 years. The earliest parts of the monument, such as the circular ditch and bank, predate the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was primarily built around 2580–2560 BC. This makes Stonehenge one of the world's oldest standing stone monuments.

4. What is the historical and cultural significance of Stonehenge today?

Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its outstanding universal value. It represents a remarkable feat of prehistoric engineering and an enduring mystery of human ingenuity. Its precise alignment with the solstices highlights its potential use as an ancient calendar or ceremonial center, offering unique insights into the beliefs, customs, and astronomical knowledge of its builders. It continues to be a site of spiritual significance and archaeological study.

5. Where is Stonehenge geographically located within the UK?

Stonehenge is located in Wiltshire, a county in the southwest of England, United Kingdom. It stands prominently on Salisbury Plain, approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) north of the city of Salisbury and about 140 kilometers (90 miles) west-southwest of London. Its rural setting adds to its timeless and enigmatic appeal.

6. What are the recommended public transportation options to reach Stonehenge?

To reach Stonehenge by public transport, you can take a train from London Waterloo station directly to Salisbury. From Salisbury train station, the 'Stonehenge Tour Bus' provides a convenient hop-on, hop-off service directly to the monument. Alternatively, local taxis are available from Salisbury, or for those who enjoy cycling, designated routes lead from the city to the site. Many visitors also opt for organized coach tours from London for a hassle-free experience.

7. What unique aspects can visitors experience during a private viewing of Stonehenge?

During a private viewing of Stonehenge, visitors gain exclusive access within the inner stone circle itself, typically before or after public opening hours. This allows for a tranquil and intimate experience, away from the usual crowds, where you can walk among the ancient sarsen and bluestones. It provides a unique opportunity to witness moments like sunrise or sunset from an unparalleled vantage point directly within the monument, offering a deeply personal connection to its mystique.

8. How can I arrange for a visit or tour that includes a private viewing of Stonehenge?

Arranging a visit that includes a private viewing of Stonehenge usually requires booking a specialized tour package, as inner circle access is highly restricted and not available with standard admission. These exclusive tours often operate during early morning or late evening hours. You can secure such a unique experience through a reputable travel platform like KKday, which offers comprehensive packages including exclusive access and comfortable, reliable transportation, simplifying your travel arrangements and ensuring a seamless visit.
