Suzhou boat banquets originated in the Tang Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Historically known as 'painted boat banquets,' they are a unique dining culture of the Jiangnan water towns. The late Qing Dynasty record 'Wang Si Shou Boat Menu' lists 30 main dishes, 8 cold appetizers, and 12 dim sum items, characterized by fresh ingredients, refined techniques, and elegant dish names, establishing the Su-style cuisine's signature 'stewing, braising, simmering, and slow-cooking' style. Today, the Gusu boat banquet restores these ancient methods, combining them with modern experiences to carry on the reputation of 'the beauty of Wuzhong menus and the excellence of dining on a boat.'
The Gusu boat banquet is a signature experience on Shantang Street in Suzhou. The painted boat banquet is the core of the Gusu boat banquet experience, featuring a private charter boat ride on a retro-style painted boat for approximately 90 minutes (1.5 hours). This includes the boat ticket, a full-course Su-style meal, and a sightseeing cruise. Departing from the Shantang Street Pier, you will cruise slowly along the Shantang River and the moat, enjoying the white-walled, black-tiled architecture, ancient bridges, flowing water, and lantern-lit night views while you dine, immersing yourself in the charm of the Jiangnan water towns.
Route and Duration: Shantang Street Pier to Shantang River and moat loop. The entire journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. There are no stops along the way, and the slow cruising speed is perfect for sightseeing and photography.
Boat Type and Environment: New Chinese-style retro painted boats featuring mahogany carved window lattices, red lanterns, air conditioning, and solid wood tables and chairs. The space is elegant and can accommodate 4–12 people, making it suitable for private dining, team building, or dates.
Dining Service: Authentic Su-style cuisine prepared fresh on the boat (such as Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish, Osmanthus Braised Pork, and Crab Roe Tofu). The set menu includes cold appetizers, hot dishes, dim sum, and tea. No additional boat fees are required.
Best Time: 17:30–19:00 for the dinner banquet to catch the sunset, blue hour, and night lights for the most photogenic atmosphere.

Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish
A classic Su-style dish. The skin is fried until golden and crispy, while the fish meat remains tender and firm. Each piece is coated in a sweet and sour sauce, making it fresh, appetizing, and suitable for all ages.
Crab Roe Noodles
Topped with a generous amount of crab roe, the noodles are coated in the rich, savory flavor once mixed. Every bite is packed with umami, offering an authentic old-Suzhou taste.
