The core of this Japanese Matcha workshop lies in guiding participants to personally experience two of the most authentic brewing methods in Japanese tea ceremony: 'Usucha' (thin tea) and 'Koicha' (thick tea). You will learn how to brew Usucha, which has a clear tea aroma and dense foam, and Koicha, which has a silken, rich texture and requires refined whisking techniques, unlocking a double layer of taste sensations.
The workshop will deeply introduce the soul tool of traditional Japanese tea preparation: the 'Chasen' (bamboo whisk). Participants will learn to differentiate how Chasens of different bristle counts and materials affect the flavor and texture of the tea, thereby mastering professional-level whisking secrets to ensure the Matcha presents its best flavor and deepen your understanding of tea ceremony tools.
After mastering traditional whisking techniques, the workshop will guide participants in transforming freshly whisked, high-quality Matcha into several aesthetically pleasing special blended Matcha drinks. This allows authentic Matcha to move beyond tradition and perfectly integrate into your daily life, experiencing the diverse creative flavors and enjoyment of Matcha.
Matcha originated in China during the Tang and Song dynasties and was brought back to Japan by the Japanese monk Eisai in the 12th century. Matcha was initially used for Zen meditation in Japanese temples, gradually developing into a unique tea ceremony culture. It transformed from a medicinal beverage into an art form, becoming an important symbol of Japanese culture.
Usucha (thin tea) is brewed with a smaller amount of Matcha powder and more water, resulting in a refreshing taste with fine, dense foam, suitable for daily consumption. Koicha (thick tea) uses more Matcha powder and less water, with a texture as rich as cream and a more concentrated, sweet flavor. It requires higher Matcha quality and whisking skills and is often used in formal tea ceremonies.
There's no absolute rule for the best time to drink Japanese Matcha, but it's generally recommended in the morning or afternoon. Matcha contains natural caffeine and L-theanine, which provide gentle yet sustained energizing effects and help improve focus. It should be avoided in the late afternoon or before bed to prevent sleep disruption.
Japanese Matcha is rich in potent antioxidants, especially catechins, which help combat free radicals and delay cellular aging. It also contains L-theanine, which promotes relaxation and improves focus, while providing stable energy. It is beneficial for cardiovascular health and may support metabolism.
It's important to drink Matcha in moderation; excessive consumption may lead to palpitations or sleep disturbances due to caffeine. Drinking high-concentration Matcha on an empty stomach might irritate the stomach, so it's recommended to drink it with or after meals. Individuals sensitive to caffeine, pregnant women, or those with specific health conditions should consult a healthcare professional before drinking.
