Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) are generally considered the best seasons for visiting the Kumano Kodo. Spring offers pleasant temperatures and lush greenery, while autumn provides comfortable hiking weather and beautiful fall foliage. Summers can be hot and humid with higher chances of rain, and winters can be cold with potential for snow in higher elevations, making some paths more challenging.
The classic trekking route from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is approximately 7 kilometers long and typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. This section is generally considered moderate in difficulty, suitable for first-time trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. It involves gentle ascents and descents through forests, offering a serene experience of the ancient pilgrimage path.
For tours departing from Osaka, travelers typically gather at designated meeting points in the city, such as a major train station or hotel. From there, transportation like a tour bus or chartered vehicle is provided to take participants directly to the Kumano Kodo region and the specific starting points of the pilgrimage, such as Hosshinmon-oji. This integrated approach simplifies logistics and eliminates the need for individual public transport planning.
The Otorii gate at Kumano Hongu Taisha is Japan's largest torii gate, standing impressively at 33.9 meters tall and 42 meters wide. It marks the entrance to the sacred precincts and serves as a powerful symbol of the spiritual journey on the Kumano Kodo. Visitors can witness this monumental structure, explore the main shrine, and appreciate its serene setting beside the Kumano River, which offers excellent photography opportunities.
Besides Kumano Hongu Taisha, the Kumano Sanzan pilgrimage includes Kumano Nachi Taisha and Kumano Hayatama Taisha. Kumano Nachi Taisha is famously associated with Nachi Falls, Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall, offering a stunning combination of nature and spirituality. Kumano Hayatama Taisha is known for its vibrant vermilion architecture and ancient camphor tree. Visiting all three shrines offers a comprehensive experience of the Kumano faith.
During the 2-day tour, accommodation is typically provided in Nachi Katsuura, a popular hot spring town in the Kumano region. Staying in Nachi Katsuura allows travelers to relax and rejuvenate after a day of trekking. Many hotels there offer hot spring baths, providing comfort and a chance to experience local Japanese hospitality, setting a leisurely pace for the overall travel experience.
The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage notebook is a special souvenir provided to travelers to commemorate their journey. It can be used to collect unique commemorative stamps at various designated points along the pilgrimage routes, including the major shrines like Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha. This creates a personalized and tangible record of the sacred sites visited.
For trekking on the Kumano Kodo, essential items include comfortable, broken-in hiking shoes with good grip, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended), a small backpack, a reusable water bottle, and basic rain gear, especially during the wetter seasons. Sun protection like a hat and sunscreen is also advisable. Bringing some snacks for energy during the trek is also a good idea.
