Iki, the Island of the Gods

◆Sakyobana

This is one of Iki's most representative scenic spots, and the sight of the sheer cliffs stretching for about 1 km is breathtaking. There is a legend that in the early Edo period, when a drought continued, Onmyoji (diviners) such as Goto Sakyo performed a rain-making ritual at this place, and heavy rain began to fall, saving the villagers.

◆Isshikoku Museum

Iki Island was known as "Ikikoku" during the Yayoi period and was an important kingdom mentioned in the Chinese historical text "Wei Zhi" (Records of Wei), specifically in the section on the Wa people. The permanent exhibition room displays approximately 2,000 valuable artifacts unearthed from various archaeological sites and burial mounds scattered throughout the island, including the Haranotsuji site. Visitors can even lift some of the artifacts to experience their weight.

◆Haranotsuji Archaeological Park

This archaeological site has been identified as the capital of "Iki-koku," a kingdom described in the "Records of Wei: Account of the Wa People." It is a large-scale, multi-moated settlement formed from the 2nd-3rd centuries BC to the 3rd-4th centuries AD (Yayoi period to the beginning of the Kofun period), and it extends approximately 1 km square in both the east-west and north-south directions. Like the Toro Site (Shizuoka Prefecture) and the Yoshinogari Site (Saga Prefecture), it is designated as a National Special Historic Site, often referred to as a "national treasure among historical sites."

◆Tsukuyomi Shrine

The enshrined deity is Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. It is said that he grants wishes for all matters related to the moon, such as the calendar and the ebb and flow of the tides, as well as for safety and safe voyages. The Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) states that the Tsukuyomi Shrine located within the Matsuo Taisha Shrine in Kyoto was established by Oshimi-no-Sukune, an ancestor of the Iki provincial governor, and is considered the head shrine of all Tsukuyomi Shrines scattered throughout Japan.

◆ Harahoge Jizo

The "Harahoge Jizo" is enshrined in the sea off Hachimanura, known as the "village of female divers." When the tide comes in, the Jizo statue is submerged up to its chest, and its appearance evokes a sense of melancholy. The six Jizo statues are said to save people from suffering and worries in the six realms (hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and heaven), and it is said that they are enshrined locally to commemorate female divers and whales that have perished at sea. Incidentally, the name "Harahoge Jizo" is said to come from the fact that "the Jizo's belly is round and hollowed out!"

Tsushima, an island on the border

◆Tsushima Museum

Tsushima has a long history of active exchange with the Korean Peninsula and other parts of Asia, as well as mainland Japan, from ancient times to the present day. The Tsushima Museum, which exhibits a wide range of materials on Tsushima's history, archaeology, art, folklore, and nature, and uses animation and other methods to present them in an easy-to-understand way, opened on April 30, 2022.

◆Manshoin Temple

Founded in 1615 by Yoshinari, the 20th head of the So family, to pray for the repose of his father Yoshitomo's soul, this temple has since become the family temple for successive generations of the So family. It is the oldest building on Tsushima Island, and inside the hall are three ritual implements gifted by the King of Korea and large memorial tablets of Tokugawa shoguns. Furthermore, the 132 stone steps known as Hyakugangi create a mystical atmosphere. It is a nationally designated historical site, where the history of the So family is etched.
