Step back in time aboard Zig Zag Railway, one of Australia's most historic heritage rail journeys, nestled in the Blue Mountains just two hours from Sydney CBD and 30 minutes from Katoomba.

Hauled by a genuine steam locomotive (built in 1869), your train winds along the Great Lithgow Zig Zag, crossing dramatic century-old viaducts and passing through sandstone tunnels carved straight into the mountainside, all set against sweeping Australian bushland scenery.

Choose from a relaxed 45-minute round trip or a longer 90-minute journey, with multiple departures running daily. Group check-in, reserved seating and free coach parking make it easy for tour groups to hop on and off, and the on-site retail shop and food and beverage area are ready for a browse or a bite before or after your ride.

Please note: on days of very high fire danger, or for technical reasons, a diesel locomotive may replace the steam locomotive without prior notice — we'll always aim to deliver a similar experience.

Weather:
- Our trains operate in wet weather—rain often adds to the atmosphere, with steam drifting through the mist to create an even more magical experience. Views are still visible in light cloud, and our enclosed carriages provide a warm and comfortable journey, protected from the elements.
- During summer, on days of high fire danger, services may be operated by a heritage diesel locomotive instead of steam. This ensures we continue to protect the beautiful Blue Mountains environment while still delivering your Zig Zag experience safely.
Accessibility:
- Clarence Station precinct fully accessible including toilets, cafe and retail area. Train also accessible. Please advise station staff on arrival if you will require assistance to board.
- Prams are not allowed on board the train due to space restrictions but can be left in the pram parking area of the station building.
Food and Beverages:
- Food and beverages can be purchased from the café at Clarence Station and are permitted onboard the train.
- Additional retail outlets at each station offer snacks, drinks and souvenirs.
Travel & Road Conditions:
- When traveling to Clarence, please allow plenty of time for your journey, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. From Sydney, the drive typically takes around two hours via the Great Western Highway or Bells Line of Road, both offering scenic routes through the Blue Mountains. From the Central West, travel times will vary, so it’s best to check conditions ahead of departure.
- Please note that there is currently increased congestion due to the closure of Mount Victoria Pass. While this does not affect the route to Clarence directly, it has resulted in significantly higher traffic volumes in the area. We strongly recommend allowing additional travel time to ensure you arrive relaxed and ready for your experience.
