Himakajima is a small island located in Aichi Prefecture, situated south of the Chita Peninsula in Ise Bay. It is widely known as "Octopus Island" (Tako-jima) due to the abundance of octopus, which is a prominent local specialty. The island's identity is deeply intertwined with its rich marine life and serene atmosphere, making it a popular destination for seafood enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful coastal retreat.
Himakajima holds significance within the Chita Peninsula region primarily for its vibrant fishing culture, particularly its renown as "Octopus Island." Visitors can indulge in fresh local seafood, with octopus being a year-round highlight and fugu (pufferfish) available during the winter. Its tranquil island environment, picturesque coastal scenery, and opportunities for relaxing activities like cycling and walking contribute to its charm, offering a distinct experience compared to the mainland.
On Himakajima, recommended activities include savoring the fresh local seafood, especially the island's famous octopus dishes. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls or cycling tours around the island, exploring its charming fishing villages and scenic coastal paths. The island also offers several beautiful viewpoints for photography. Don't miss seeking out the iconic octopus sculptures that dot the island, embodying its unique character and relaxed pace of life.
A suggested 2-day itinerary could begin with exploring Tokoname, known for its pottery and Maneki-neko, on the first day. This would be followed by a ferry journey to Himakajima for an overnight stay in an ocean-view room, where you can enjoy fresh seafood. The second day could be dedicated to Himakajima's island charm, engaging in activities like cycling or exploring its attractions, before concluding the tour with a comfortable journey aboard the Kintetsu limited express trains.
The ideal time to visit Himakajima depends on your preferred experience. For warm weather and coastal activities, late spring to early autumn (May to October) is highly recommended. If your interest lies in tasting the exquisite local fugu (pufferfish), the winter months (November to March) are optimal as it is the peak season for this delicacy. The island's charm can be appreciated throughout the year, with each season offering a unique appeal.
In Tokoname, visitors can immerse themselves in a town celebrated for its rich pottery heritage and as the home of the iconic Maneki-neko (lucky cat). Key attractions include the atmospheric Pottery Footpath, where you can wander among historic brick chimneys, climb slopes lined with pottery, and discover unique ceramic art. Be sure to look out for the giant Maneki-neko sculptures and browse for charming pottery souvenirs, all set against a picturesque red-brick landscape.
The Kintetsu Shimakaze train provides a luxurious travel experience with its premium seats, featuring the private railway's first-ever use of genuine leather upholstery. This offers passengers a high-grade and exceptionally comfortable journey. The Kintetsu Hinotori train, on the other hand, prioritizes passenger comfort in its regular seats, which are equipped with innovative "back shells" that allow reclining without encroaching on the space of the person behind. Both trains ensure a pleasant and scenic travel experience.
Guests participating in the Himakajima tour can anticipate staying in an exquisite ocean-view resort hotel. All rooms are designed in a western style and are specifically configured to offer expansive, uninterrupted views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean and Ise Bay. This ensures a truly relaxing and immersive coastal experience, where a substantial part of the panorama from your room (excluding the balcony) is dominated by the serene sea.
