Nestled in the heart of Switzerland, the Aare Gorge, or Aareschlucht, is one of the country's most breathtaking natural wonders. Located near the town of Meiringen in the Jungfrau Region, this impressive canyon attracts nature lovers, hikers, and photographers from around the globe.

The Aare Gorge was formed during the last Ice Age as the Aare River carved its way through the limestone rock. With towering cliffs that reach heights of up to 200 metres, the gorge stretches about 1.4 kilometres. The dramatic landscape features stunning rock formations, crystal-clear water, and lush vegetation that flourish in the temperate climate.

Aare Gorge is easily accessible from the town of Meiringen, making it a popular half day-trip destination. The site boasts well-maintained walking paths and viewing platforms, allowing you to explore the gorge safely. Illuminated tunnels and bridges enhance the experience. The paths are suitable for all age groups, making it a family-friendly destination. Besides hiking, you can enjoy photography, bird watching, and simply marvelling at the stunning views of the gorge.

  • Please refer to your voucher for final information regarding meeting points, pick-up locations, and pick-up time

  • Meeting point description: Show your printed or mobile voucher at the cash desk of one of the Aareschlucht entrances.(Aareschluchtstrasse, 3860 Schattenhalb, Switzerland)

  • Accessibility:The Aare Gorge is accessible for narrower pushchairs from the west entrance up to the main attractions in the middle of the gorge. In case of large numbers of visitors, access with wheelchairs and prams may be restricted for safety reasons

  • Dogs are welcome in the Aare Gorge on a short leash and free of charge

  • Know in advance:Aare Gorge West Entrance: 12 April 2025 – 2nd November 2025 / Aare Gorge East Entrance: 10 May 2024 – 2 November 2024

  • When both entrances are open, you can pass through the entire length of the gorge

  • Opening hours: 12.04.2025 - 06.06.2025 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm 07.06. – 14.09.2025 from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm 15.09. – 02.11.2025 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm
